Sprint HTC Mogul (PPC-6800)

Well it is finally time to say goodbye to the Mogul. It has seen its fair share of light in the world of my cellphone collection. Overall I am sad to see it go because I know I will be missing the keyboard when I embark on my next mobile experience: The Touch by HTC. There are of course reasons to be happy with my next mobile phone purchase; mainly the 128MB of RAM that the HTC Touch brings to the table in its new and upgraded CDMA version offered exclusively for Sprint (Although we know how long those things last, cough cough Can You Hear Me Now?)
I would still have to give my support to anyone using the Mogul as their primary mobile device at the moment. When you evaluate the list of options on the market for carrier subsidized handsets the options are rather limited. For AT&T you have one powerhouse do it all device: the Tilt by AT&T (HTC Kaiser, HTC TYTN II). For Verizon you have either the out-dated VX6700 which will soon be replaced by their own version of the Mogul PPC 6800, the VX6800 or the newly released yet somewhat redundant spec’d Samsung i760. The final carrier that really comes to play when you think of the big 4 (tmobile, verizon, sprint, at&) is T-mobile which has the T-mobile Wing.

If you take a look at the Spb Benchmark Index it seems as though the HTC TyTN takes the cake versus the Mogul in overal pocket pc speed, but when you review all of the categories used as basis for the comparison you will see the opposite. The Mogul wins the Cpu index speed and the Graphics index, but the AT&T Tilt wins in the overall pocket pc speed index and the file system index (the file system speed).

Very interesting results, but not too surprising when you find out that although both the Mogul and the Tilt are packed with 400mhz dual core chips, the Tilt uses the 7200 qualcomm chip while the Mogul uses the 7500 qualcomm chip. The addition of GPS on the Tilt also takes away some of its processing power, but the added benefit can easily eliminate that hindered fact. Despite the differences in GPS and 3MP autofocus camera, the Tilt is not drastically improved over the Mogul, especially when you factor in the total cost of ownership using AT&T, which has a much smaller 3G base than Sprint. I will stick to my earlier consesus and state that the value/performance combination leaves you with one buying choice for a carrier subsidized handset ‘do it all device’ the Mogul by HTC offered by Sprint. (At least at the moment)
