Palm OS + My Location Google Maps: Palm Based Treos Get Love Too?

Palm Infocenter is an excellent source of breaking news for Palm based devices (Treos).  After some confusion of whether or not Palm OS based devices would be getting the My Location feature (aka GPS via Google Maps) the new consensus is YES!  The Windows Mobile based Treos have already recieved the addition of My Location on their Google Maps (Treo 700wx, Treo 750, Treo 500v), but the Treo 680, Centro, 755p owners of the world would still like their fare share of love.

Palm OS My Location

As for the details of the My Location feature it acquires your positioning through cell tower triangulation.  It is not enabling hardware on the phone that might have been carrier locked, but instead making use of the cell towers to makeup for the shortcomings of the device (no dedicated GPS receiver on-board).

The reason that the Palm OS based devices were not able to capitalize on the My Location feature while their Windows Mobile brothers were enjoying the glory was due to an API for determining cell tower IDs.  The confusion has been addressed and Palm claims that this information was private on the Palm OS based devices, but will be available after a ROM update.  So as long as the new ROM update for your Palm OS based devices comes soon, it should unlock an API for determining cell tower IDs and provide the necessary tools to make use of the My Location feature in Google Maps.
