DSC-T200: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T200 Review

article Nick Marshall

Several months ago when I purchased the Nokia E90 it was the second time I had VGA recording capabilities on a mobile phone. The first VGA recording device I was blessed with was the Nokia N95. At the time I was very impressed by being able to record in VGA with real stereo quality sound. The pingy metallic sound of my traditional windows mobile phones recording at 320×240 really was not cutting it at the time. Fast forward 6 months later and my windows mobile phones are still recording @ 320×240 while Nokia and other manufacturers are ready to step up to HD recording on their cell phones. Here is a sample clip from the E90 recording @ 640×480 that I took back in August which we will use as comparison for the video recording capabilities of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T200.

The Sony DSC-T200 is a feature rich point and shoot digital camera packed with 8.1 Megapixels, 5X Optical Zoom, Super SteadyShot and a 3.5″ wide screen touch panel LCD.  With the price drop of memory stick pro duos you can pick up a 4GB card for just under $60 at your local Fry’s or Best Buy.  This will get you about 1300 shots @ full 8 Megapixel quality.  This is plenty of shots and since the battery lasts for about 250 shots on a full charge you will have plenty of days to shoot before you fill up the memory stick and need to dump the files onto your desktop.  In my tests I peaked at an average of 220 shots with the lcd brightness setting to high and automatic picture settings.  My pictures were a combination of macro focus shots and low light no flash settings.

Here is a video sample of the Sony DSC-T200 640×480 Video setting. The conditions are indoor with semi lighting.

As you can see from the sample picture and sample video clip, the camera is impressive out of the box with auto settings. It is very simple to operate and you will continue to see the camera in action on this website. I will be migrating to this device on a permanent basis so future posts and video reviews will be ultimately left up to your judgement. I will let the comments section be the true dictator of picture and video quality for the Sony DSC-T200 in the upcoming months. Happy New Year everyone!!!
