First of all let me make this information as simple as possible. If you are currently not a registered user over at ppcgeeks.com then it is time get well acquainted with these guys because they will be your savior when it comes to modifying any Windows Mobile based device. There are many well informed and helpful users on their forums which can guide you in the right direction and have spent time to provide Stickys for new members to answer simple questions.
Step 1: HTC Mogul RUU Utility
Moving forward, with the recent “unreleased” HTC Mogul Sprint ROM being found on the internet I felt it was time that I provided a simple tutorial on how to go about installing a ROM on your HTC Mogul. The first term you need to become a familiar with is RUU Rom Upgrade Utility; this is the software program you will execute on your computer to begin installing a new ROM on your HTC Mogul. You will want to get the RUU package off the ppcgeek ftp compliments of ImCokeMan. This file will not be necessary for this particular ROM implementation because the ROM is included in a package, but it is good to keep this rar for future releases since generally ROM files are posted by themselves with .nbh extensions.

Step 2: HTC Mogul Hard SPL
Now the other main component to being able to load a custom ROM is the SPL. The SPL essentially unlocks the phone so that the RUU Rom Update Utility is able to flash new ROMs to the phone. Basically you need to download the SPL file in order to make use of any ROMs that are not issued directly from your carrier or HTC. This is a key component and should not be overlooked, also recently with the GPS Rev A unofficial ROM hitting the internet a special SPL has been packaged and released over at ppcgeeks. (You are going to want to thank Olipro and ImCoKeMaN over at ppcgeeks for this one as well).
Hard SPL unlocking for GPS/REV A Roms
Now you have the Hard SPL file at this point and you have your empty Rom Update Utility RUU ready for a custom ROM. Take out your checklist and cross those two off, but don’t forget your data cable. The most critical piece of hardware other than the phone in this process is going to be your sync cable. Also if you have never connected your HTC Mogul to the computer you will want to make sure you have ActiveSync (xp) or Sync Center (vista) installed on your machines.
Step 3: HTC Mogul ROM 3.16.651.0 Time
Time to get the 3.16.651.0 ROM are you ready?

You might be asking why there are three links for the ROM; the answer is that free hosting is the safest way to put a unauthorized ROM on the internet and nobody wants to be left holding the bag when it is discovered where the leak came from to bring this ROM to the internet. A small price to pay for GPS and EVDO Rev a capability if you ask me, but then again you might not have been waiting since the Mogul launch day for either of these features.
Step 4: HTC Mogul Exit Bootloader (Help Mom I’m Stuck!)
Now you have the custom ROM and you have the Hard SPL so things are moving along very well at this point and you should be well prepared for the ROM upgrading process, but before we get ahead of ourselves there is another essential download that you will want to get now before you freak out during the installation process and start believing that your HTC Mogul is toast.
This program will become your savior if you ever have the uncomfortable opportunity to be left looking at a red blue and green bootloader screen after executing the hard spl. You are now at the point where you have all the necessary files, you have your HTC Mogul in hand with data cable, activesync or sync center are installed and you are ready for the big show. So lets have at it.
IMPORTANT: If at this point you felt that this entire post was a waste of your time and you have been loading Custom ROMs on your HTC Mogul (Titan) since day 1 you may want to remember that this particular ROM and all future GPS/EVDO Rev A roms will require that you have an original bootloader. This would NOT be the case if you have ever done any Custom ROM work so I will direct you to ImCoKeMaN’s re-virginizing solution at this point.
Step 5: HTC Mogul 3.16.651.0 ROM Installation
Time to get the ball rolling and using GPS so you are going to want to follow these simple instructions in the proper order and you will be smooth sailing in no time
- Run your Hard SPL unlocking for GPS/REV A Roms.
- If you are stuck on the bootloader screen (red,green,blue) then use the bootloader unlocker tool Titan Exit Bootloader
- You are ready for the 3.16.651.0 ROM so have at it. Run the .exe file Website 1 Website 2 Website 3
- Let the phone complete the installation and restart. If the program says that the ROM was corrupt after the installation (ROM flashing) is complete don’t worry about it that’s usually how this thing goes since you are not using an official ROM with the Rom Update Utility RUU.

The list of 3 roms is just 3 locations that offer the file. Since they were all using free file hosting services it was only a matter of time before 2 out of the 3 went down. So simply download 1 file.

well i must have really screwed up here…
I downloaded all the above files to my pc. connected my mogul to active sync.
started to “Run your Hard SPL unlocking for GPS/REV A Roms”
then got “stuck on the bootloader screen (red,green,blue)”
then tried to use the “bootloader unlocker tool Titan Exit Bootloader”.
got a usb error. then I couldn’t do anything so I removed battery . now im am seemingly screwed. black screen red light no reaction to any touch. I have violated warranty too no? is there a solution? I was just trying to enable usb since I am traveling today.

after removing the usb cable and disconnecting the battery again i was able to cycle power and luckily get back to my original state.

successfully completed all steps except the last. when I run the actual 3.16.651.0 ROM file from my pc all I get is a brief glimpse of a black dos like box that disappears quickly.
tried to copy the rom over to the storage card on mogul to open it from there but file explore won’t let me paste the file on to the device.
oh well - really do need to travel and I can likely get there without the gps. maybe later!

First, what operating system are you running? All ROM updates are done through a USB connection to the phone and run on your desktop computer. You will need either XP or Vista to do this.
If you are having trouble getting the device to boot, make sure you have activesync stopped or windows device center stopped, close it and make sure it is not running in the background by going into the task manager and manually shutting it down. Exitbootloader will be able to restart the phone back to normal if you run it once activesync/windows device center is closed.
When you ran the rom RUU (on your desktop computer) it first opens up a program dialog box and should detect which version of software you have on your device and tell you which version it is going to upgrade. The dos prompt that you briefly see… Is that happening before you ever see the RUU screen where it shows a picture of the moguul on the left and gives an introduction to the upgrade process.
You can always revert back to the last official rom from sprint by making sure activesync is open and downloading then running the software while the usb cable is connected to the Mogul.

thanks - I just got back to town. Before I left was able to revert back to the TITAN_SPRINT_WWE_2.17.651.0…….
however one goofy thing has happened. All the applications work fine except that the phone will completely shut off if i hit the soft reset button and require a hard reset to revive. Additionally, if the phone is unplugged it will also turn completely off as well.
While it seems logical this symptom has something more to do with hardware The phone worked 100% prior to my botched upgrade attempt. So am thinking it has to be a result of the upgrade and thus is repairable.
I am running XP and I was using am using a usb cable for these operations.
Thanks for your detailed response. obviously I am new to ppc world. I will run through the process of reloading the 2.17.651.0 rom. to make sure I have done it correctly.

I downloaded and installed this hacked rom, and it worked fine for me. The GPS function was enabled. The only problem was that i lost the ability to use Active Sync. The phone is no longer being recognized by Active Sync. I decided Sto flash back to the original rom and got the Active Sync function back…BUT…. as “big dummy” has posted, the phone would shut down and would not wake up again if i hit the sleep/standby button on the side. Also the phone would shut off if plugged in. At this point, i decided that i could live without Active sync, but can not live with my phone not waking up after being in standby mode, so i reflashed back to version 3.16.651.0. I love having the GPS function working. Using it with application such as google map and Microsoft livesearch for PPC is free! I figure if i need to transfer anything to my phone, i can just email it to my phone. I will just wait for the next official rom release, which might fix my Active Sync problem.

reloaded rom last night - still had power issues after install. after a hard reset my soft power button worked a few times then, once again started shut down the ppc requiring a reboot. guess I’ll be stopping by a sprint store.

I was having the same problem with the power. i downloaded the 3.16.. everything seems to have gone fine.. but when it was done, I can’t seem to use my phone anymore. it has somehow lost my phone number. I tried to call my voice mail, and the number is TOTALLY different. did I do something wrong or did I not finish something here?
