7 Days Until Windows Mobile 6.1 Annoucement?

Comments

by Nick Marshall on February 4, 2008

Windows Mobile 6.1 is expected to be announced at the 3GSM convention which takes place Feb 11-14 in Barcelona. If you have never heard of the 3GSM convention you might have heard the words Mobile World Congress thrown around and not known they were one in the same. The prediction is that at this conference the announcement will be made for Windows Mobile 6.1 in an attempt to win back some love after the iPhone came stomping into the smartphone arena this past summer. If you had read my previous How To post on setting up the newest ROM for the HTC Mogul you would currently be using Windows Mobile 6.1.

What are the changes in Windows Mobile 6 versus 6.1?
The biggest change is going to be the web browser which has taken the pinch and slide techniques of the iPhone and brought some of that functionality to Windows Mobile. The Zoom feature is added to the Internet Explorer, but I do remember that in Windows Mobile 6 certain pda’s with vga resolution could do some zooming built into IE. This is a little different and honestly seems to be a knock off of the Opera Browser. I do not think that the changes in the web browser are going to win over fans, but it is a step in the right direction. Think of Windows Mobile 6.1 more as a service pack for your Windows Operating System rather than a revolution.

Besides the Internet Explorer change what else in Windows Mobile 6.1 makes this worth my time?
Many of you out there have had the pleasure of using threaded text messaging on your Windows Mobile devices for quite some time. One big change in Windows Mobile 6.1 is exactly this feature, but the big bonus is that threaded text (sms) will now be included in the Mobile operating system rather than requiring a separate cab installation. If you are curious about threaded text messaging just go checkout either a Blackberry or an iPhone and scroll through some previous SMS dialogs which will be displayed in Instant Messaging fashion. Honestly I don’t think I could ever live without threaded SMS and if you also feel the same way you might want to go ahead and install the threaded sms cab to your Windows Mobile phone. For the do it yourself individuals out there go ahead and have a go with the .cab file below. Simply save the cab file to your storage card or internal memory on your Windows Mobile 6 device then go ahead and run the file (on the phone). It will require a restart when it is done, but you will never go back to non-threaded text messaging again.

For the official Windows Mobile 6.1 threaded SMS (instant message style text messaging) here is a peek at what you can expect as far as the interface and style. Note: this is the same interface you will see with the do it yourself installation .cab file (Windows Mobile 6 Threaded SMS by CodyPPC).
