The chase is on in 2008 as the results for Canalys mobile device shipments for Q42007 were announced.  The news is rather impressive since Apple only entered the smartphone market midway through 2007 and really did not get a chance to enjoy the fruits of their accomplishments as an established smartphone manufacturer until recently.  Apple was able to edge out Motorola for the ranks as number 3 below #1 Nokia and #2 RIM in the Q42007 shipments.  We can all expect the iPhone haters to begin the bashing, but for the statistically inclined standard deviation trend analysis lovers out there check the chart below.
