The word sell-out comes to mind, but we will hold our official decision on the subject until more details emerge.  Toshiba and Sony have come to terms with the next generation of high definition video formats with a very unexpected partnership.  Sony has agreed to sell one of its plants in western Japan for approximately $835 Million which produces Cell processors and RSX graphic chips.  As you know the Cell processor is the key behind the power of the Playstation 3 which is clearly the most common form of a Blu-ray player in the household.

What really makes the entire subject tricky is that Microsoft’s big alliance in the hardware department for the Xbox 360 has always been Toshiba.  With Toshiba becoming partners with Sony and the Blu-ray format will this lead to Microsoft adding Toshiba Blu-ray drives to their next generation Xbox 720 or will we see Blu-ray drives in the next version of the Xbox 360.  Only time will tell, but this is definitely a move that has to spark some interest in the Microsoft camp and anyone who believed in HD DVD.
