It seems that every week we hear about a new chipset designed to bring more megapixels and higher quality video to the mobile market. Today is no different as TI (Texas Instruments) has made an announcement regarding the upcoming release of their OMAP-DM510 co-processor designed to bring high-quality image and video processing to mobile devices. The OMAP-DM510 co-processor is capable of taking 8 megapixel still shots, 3fps burst modes and DVD quality video at 30fps which we would guess translates into 640×480 resolution on par with the current Nokia lineup (N95, N82, etc). The codec support for the OMAP-DM510 is limited to MPEG4 and H.264 at the moment, but it can be implemented alongside or instead of a dedicated applications processor so this co-processor might turn out to be very successful. The launch date is coming in 2009, but you can expect to hear more news about the OMAP-DM510 in upcoming handsets later this year as the OMAP developer network continues to work on feature enhancements such as face detection, color compensation and blink detection.
