It looks like all the focus on the Samsung Instinct has caused Sprint to lose focus on it’s next generation wireless technology, Xohm. As we have mentioned in the past, Xohm is Sprint’s WiMax service which recently received a large amount of funding from Intel and is built on a partnership with Clearwire. Unfortunately the WiMax service will not be launched this month as originally planned and will instead be launched later this year. The lack of Sprint Xohm announcements at CTIA this week have been a good indicator that the pipe is running dry for Sprint WiMax, but we were secretly hoping the scheduled launch was continuing as planned.
The official word from Sprint is that the delay has nothing to do with technology issues and that Sprint wants the launch of Xohm to meet the high expectations set for its release. Honestly I doubt the majority of the wireless users out there are counting the days until Sprint’s WiMax network receives the official launch, but I guess it’s nice to see that Sprint cares for us tech geeks out there. The launch for Sprint’s Xohm WiMax service will be re-scheduled once a finalized partnership has been established with Clearwire, Intel and others.
