 Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition Details

Sure we told you that the Nokia N810 WiMAX edition was a sure thing, but hearing it from Nokia at CTIA Las Vegas is still music to our ears.  Nokia made the N810 WiMAX edition Internet Tablet official today by confirming the device’s existence and announcing the release date .  Summer 2008 will be the United States launch date and as usual you can expect to be able to pickup the N810 at a Nokia Store, Nokia.com or the slew of eBay sellers flooding the Internet.  With the news yesterday on Sprint’s WiMAX network rolling out later than expected let’s just hope the stars align for this launch.

So why should you care about the WiMAX edition N810? Well for starters, WiMAX reaches typical download speeds of 2-4 Mbps and peak download speeds of up to 10 Mbps.  Unlike Wi-Fi which we know only has a reach of a few hundred feet, WiMAX networks consist of interconnected base stations, each with a range of 2 to 3 miles. So enough with WiMAX let’s move onto the specs:

  • 4.13 inch touch screen
  • slide-out QWERTY keyboard
  • OS 2008, VoIP, Instant Messaging, Skype, Google Talk, Gizmo5
  • built-in web cam for video calls
  • Built-in GPS for real-time on-screen maps
  • 2GB of internal memory, expandable to a full 10GB of memory with microSD

So what happens when the N810 WiMAX edition is not in range of a WiMAX network? Simple, the N810 will access the Internet via Wi-Fi or even through conventional cellular data networks by pairing a compatible mobile phone via bluetooth.  So basically, just pair up your phone via bluetooth to the N810 WiMAX edition and you are covered for Internet access even if worst comes to worst and you are stuck using your meager 3G data connection.
