iPhone SDK 2.0 supports Embedded Youtube H.264

Yes sir, the iPhone 2.0 Pre-release build is now supporting full blown embedded YouTube videos (sorta).  Unfortunately it is not as peachy as it sounds since only YouTube content that has been coded in H.264 format will work.  H.264 is the native video supported by the iPhone so until a third party develops codecs for other video formats, this will remain the only way to watch embedded YouTube videos.

So how does it works?  The embedded YouTube functionality is achieved with the addition of a YouTube plug-in for MobileSafari that comes pre-loaded on the iPhone 2.0 software.  The next big question is whether there will be other MobileSafari plug-ins preloaded from Apple or available from 3rd party manufacturers in the iPhone Store.

Having tried to watch videos on other sites, my previous excitement has now gone. I guess video only works with quicktime videos and YouTube videos. I’m sure I’ve read or heard somewhere that the iphone gives you access to the “full internet” but as all videos are not included in this, this statement is false. It seems to be daft and a bit of a rip off that internet access is not quite 100% and that if I want to watch a demo online i have to wait until I get home to watch it on my laptop!
