India’s BlackBerry Security Worries End April 21

by Nick Marshall

The Indian government and BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion (RIM), are holding a meeting next week to address the security concerns related to tracing and intercepting emails. According to the Indian government, RIM must install servers in India to help agencies monitor BlackBerry services on the 4 carriers which support their devices (Vodafone, Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, and BPL Mobile). Without any definitive details on the number of BlackBerry subscribers in India (current guess is 500,000 users), it will be interesting to see if RIM is willing to leverage a deal with Indian officials. With the BlackBerry 9000 series surfacing on the Internet it would be a shame if a deal could not materialize from the meeting next week.
