The AT&T Tilt also known as the HTC Kaiser or HTC TyTN II is the follow-up to AT&T’s 8525, but rather than retaining the 8925 name, the design of the phone was incentive enough for AT&T to label the device: the “Tilt”. Personally the AT&T Tilt is our favorite Windows Mobile 6 Professional device based on the form factor, 3 mega-pixel camera with auto-focus and 3G HSDPA connectivity on AT&T’s 3G network. What gives the AT&T Tilt the edge over the competition on US Carriers is the out-of-the-box GPS support and the additional RAM (128MB RAM / 256MB ROM) running in combination with the Qualcomm 400MHz processor. While there are plenty of issues with the video drivers on the AT&T Tilt, the specifications and device performance in the real world make-up for any of it’s shortcomings when compared to Sprint’s HTC Mogul, Verizon’s VX6800 or T-Mobile’s HTC Wing. If you are unaware of the video driver issues on the AT&T Tilt, refer to the two links below:

HTC Video Driver Issue Statement

HTC Kaiser Video Driver Issue Fix

For starters, we are basing all of our opinions around the AT&T Tilt running the latest ROM issued by AT&T and HTC (AT&T Tilt ROM Update Version 1.62.502.0). We also had the latest ROM for the Sprint HTC Mogul running which included GPS and EV-DO Rev A support. In our experience, those that are interested in a speed comparison test should try directing their mobile browsers to http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed and select the 1MB test file. We tried the test on both the Sprint HTC Mogul and AT&T Tilt to get an idea of how well the Los Angeles area (full EV-DO Rev A network, full AT&T 3G HSDPA) did compared on the two devices. The AT&T Tilt reached a peak speed of 1900kbps while the Sprint HTC Mogul peaked at 1500kbps (prior to EV-DO Rev A we topped out at 1200kbps).

While Internet speed is not the focal point of most mobile device owners, the speed of the actual device is a priority. Being able to maximize your work in minimal time brings value to a device and this is exactly the case for the AT&T Tilt. It is true that you pay more for service when using AT&T versus Sprint’s network due to the extremely popular Sprint SERO Plans (Sprint SERO Plan explanation), but poor customer service and falling stock prices are reason enough to stick with AT&T’s Tilt. From a technical standpoint, the AT&T Tilt brings the most RAM and ROM among Windows Mobile Professional devices (tied with Sprint’s Touch) with 128MB RAM and 256MB ROM. The RAM is the big winner here in comparison with Sprint’s HTC Mogul, Verizon’s VX6800 and T-Mobile’s Wing since none of these three devices bring equal numbers to the table. The result of 128MB of RAM is smooth transitioning between programs with very little delay between performance and pressing a key on the phone. In other words, multi-tasking is a breeze with the AT&T Tilt and our prayers have been answered.
