iPhone 3G 30 Million Global Sales Forecast

by Nick Marshall

10 million units was an excellent goal, but the exclusive UK carrier, O2, said that more than 130,000 people have used its online form to pre-register for the upcoming iPhone.  This is four times the number of people who did the same when the original iPhone launched on their network.  According to O2 the high interest in the iPhone 3G really has nothing to do with the GPS support or faster data speeds, it’s the price.  With the original iPhone running $529 on contract, the new iPhone 3G sells for free when using a $88 / month plan.  CCS Insight mobile researcher Ben wood had this to say about Apple,

Apple is on course to smash its original target with 30 million sales over the next 12 months. Apple has taken an aspirational device and delivered it an affordable price point. The volume will be extraordinary.

30 million iPhones would be a huge feat, but breaking 10 million units seems more realistic.  The majority of analysts have already been convinced that the 10 million unit mark should not be a problem with the new price tag, but how many potential sales is Apple losing everyday with the iPhone 1.0 being sold out since May?
