Originally known as the Gekko, the latest addition to the Sidekick family, Sidekick 2008, will break cover July 30th 2008.  According to the release materials leaked to BGR, the Sidekick 2008 will follow previous launches by focusing on the young and social consumer looking to customize his/her handset.  The device is being described as small and compact and positioned as an entry-level Sidekick for those looking to record and share videos.  While the latest update to the Sidekick LX to enable video recording was less than impressive at sub QVGA resolutions, there is hope for quality video recording on the Sidekick 2008.

Inside the box, the Sidekick 2008 will come with two shells (one black, one metallic green) and customers will also be able to go online and create their own custom shell.  To complete the customization experience, the download Catalog will have backgrounds and themes to match all shells being sold by T-mobile and as always you can create your own theme to match your custom shell.

Now for the important information, the Sidekick 2008 device specifications.  The Sidekick 2008 will feature a 2.6 inch wQVGA resolution screen on par with the Sidekick LX as well as a 2.0 megapixel camera.  The big downer here is that the camera will not sport a flash unlike previous Sidekick models.  With video recording out of the box and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, the features mirror the Sidekick LX.  With the focus being placed on the entry-level market, the Sidekick 2008 should be priced well within the reach of most customers and work with the existing $20 unlimited data/text/picture messaging add-on.  We expect to hear more on the price and availability for existing Sidekick customers later this week.
