Nokia’s step into the world of touchscreen devices is quickly approaching. With a brief appearance in Batman: The Dark Knight, today we bring you some live shots of ‘the 5800 Tube’ in action. The Xpressmusic 5800, formerly known as ‘the Tube’, started as a rumor and gradually the full specs have been leaked, but today we focus on the UI. Unfortunately the pictures do little to impress those looking for an iPhone alternative and leaking these pictures might do more harm than good for Nokia’s touchscreen chances.

With a 3.2 inch touchscreen running at 640×360 resolution, ‘the 5800 Tube’ is the leader for screen resolution when compared against the Samsung Instinct, LG Dare, iPhone or even the upcoming full touchscreen BlackBerry Thunder. The camera is also the second area where ‘the 5800 Tube’ excels above and beyond the competition despite the LG Dare’s equal megapixels, the 3.2 megapixel Carl Zeiss optical lens and autofocus deliver the best in Nokia imaging.

With a familiar S60 UI, the hopes of a completely redesigned interface is gradually fading away. It looks as though Nokia plans to follow the path of Palm and continue recycling an aging style based on past success. We hope that the final release will come with redesigned style and possibly a unique environment to really set ‘The 5800 Tube’ apart from the competitors in the industry.

The on-screen keyboard of ‘the 5800 Tube’ is also an area that we hope to see improvements. With a generic style and clearly inferior design when compared to Apple’s iPhone, this could be the most important feature to be updated. Those familiar with the Samsung Instinct and LG Dare will find the on-screen keyboard similar to their current device, but this has been an area that has kept our ratings of these respective devices below that of the iPhone. We have high hopes and confidence in Nokia and we expect many revisions to be made to the on-screen keyboard before the final release.
