If you are living in Europe or Japan and ready for the next fashionable handset from LG, prepare yourself for the launch of the KF300, also known as the LG Wine.  With triband GSM/GPRS/EDGE support and dual displays, this flip phone delivers a decent set of features in an ultra thin form factor.  The exterior screen measures 1.3 inches and 128 x 160 pixels while the interior screen is 2.2 inches and QVGA resolution.  AS you might have expected, the LG Wine will be sold as the FOMA L706ie in Japan under NTT DoCoMo while KT Freetel will sell the phone in September in South Korea.

LG Wine KF300 landing in Europe and Japan

Details on the European launch are scarce, but we expect to see the device hit retail channels sometime in August.  The big question is whether or not a 2.0 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, 10MB of internal memory and a microSD slot will be enough to sway buyers in the most advanced cellular markets.  While we are sure the LG Wine | KF3000 | FOMA L706ie would do well in the US as a stylish handset for T-mobile USA, Europe and Japan are the dominant forces in cellular technology and the slow rollout might have hurt the success of the device.

Sony Ericsson W302 | W595 | W902 Walkman Phones

While the world waits for the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, Sony Ericsson has decided to announce three new Walkman Phones: W302, W595 and W902.  Unfortunately the W302 will be limited to EDGE data speeds and the W595 and W902 will only sport 2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA connectivity, ending the hopes and dreams of US 3G customers.  Although [...]

BlackBerry Kickstart 8220 | 8210 Reviewed, WiFi or GPS

The divergence of RIM into the world of clamshell flip phones is nearly complete with the upcoming launches of the At&t BlackBerry 8210 and T-mobile USA BlackBerry 8220.  As you might expect, the BlackBerry 8220 will be geared towards T-mobile’s UMA network much like the BlackBerry 8320 and 8120 (Curve and Pearl).  While the BlackBerry [...]

At&t iPhone 3G Speech Recognition

While Fonix Speech is currently developing iSpeak, an iPhone application which brings voice activation to the iPhone 3G, At&t Research Labs have also been working on their own solution: Speech Mashups. The big disclaimer on the At&t Research Labs solution is that it requires a high-speed Internet connection so first generation iPhone owners could [...]

While the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G both run the 2.0 software, the iPhone underground community has been without a jailbreaking tool for their shiny new toy.  The days of waiting since the July 11th launch are now coming to a close and the iPhone Dev Team has released Pwnage Tool 2.0.  This utility is for Mac OS X and jailbreaks (allowing full read/write filesystem access and installation of unofficial third party applications) the iPhone 3G.  The tool also works on the original iPhone running the 2.0 Software, but read below for a download link to version 2.0.1

Download PwnageTool 2.0 by clicking here.

In order to use PwnageTool 2.0, use the following precautions:

  • Launch the Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities and type mkdir “~/Library/iTunes/Device Support”
  • Delete all iPhone software updates from ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
  • Launch Activity Monitor (located in /Applications/Utilities) and quit the process “iTunes Helper”

When using the tool, which is relatively straightforward, take note of the following

  • Use the 1,1 image for first-generation iPhones running OS 2.0.
  • Make sure the iPhone is “off” when building the ipsw (as instructed inside the application)

How To Jailbreak the iPhone 3G, Mac only

The Pwnage Tool 2.0.1 has also been released to the general public for original iPhone jailbreaking.  There have been many enhancements and bug fixes in version 2.0.1 including:

  • It better auto-finds the bl39 and bl46 files (on your computer)
  • It creates the ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support/ folder if not present, which should help with some 1600 errors people have been having.
  • Many people have reported the PwnageTool not starting up at all (the icon never stops bouncing). This issue should be resolved now.
  • The Sparkle AppCast URL is fixed in this version, so automatic updates should work for future releases.
