Rogers announces BlackBerry Kickstart 8220 pricing

The BlackBerry Pearl with the flip, aka the BlackBerry Kickstart 8220, has just become part of Rogers Canada’s back-to-school promotion coming in September.  With the BlackBerry Kickstart set to take center stage in the affordable smartphone division, Rogers is preparing to cash in on the back to school shopping craze by offering the BlackBerry 8220 for a student-friendly price of $49.99.

Our early reports show that RIM’s expected retail price for the BlackBerry Kickstart is $599.99 and we had previously been told Rogers would offer the Kickstart for $99.99 on a 3 year contract.  It looks like $49.99 will be the price point, but as usual there is a catch to get this ultra-low price. Canadian students will need to commit to a 3-year contract, sign up for the $45 Student Plan, add on a minimum $15 email plan, and choose one of the $15 or $20 Value Packs.

The $45 Student Plan gives you 450 weekday minutes, unlimited nights and weekends starting @ 6pm, MY5 Canada-wide (unlimited talk, sms, mms to any 5 numbers in Canada), Unlimited Local Incoming minutes and $5 off Value Pack for duration of contract.

Bottom line: You will end up spending $70+ per month to have the BlackBerry Kickstart 8220 using Rogers Canada so the $49.99 price point is not as inexpensive as it first seems.  It looks like the iPhone 3G is really not that expensive to use when you look at the competition and we recommend keeping this in mind when making your phone purchase before school starts.
