Palm Treo Pro specs, pics and release date

The Treo™ Pro by Palm hit the Internet in full force this week with a surprise announcement, followed by a stop for official press shots and a video explaining the capabilities and development that went into the device.  While CDMA users just picked up the Treo 800w in July on Sprint, the rest of the world will be enjoying the latest unlocked GSM Treo very soon.

With the usual $549 US and EUR 399 UK price tags, the Treo Pro fits nicely into the high-end smartphone market at a much more reasonable cost than similar devices.  It is no mystery that Palm has its sights set on RIM’s market share, positioned to be a direct competitor against the BlackBerry Bold 9000.  The only question is whether the Treo Pro succeed without carrier subsidized pricing and the heavily discounted cost of the iPhone 3G and BlackBerry Bold on certain carriers.

Treoâ„¢ Pro by Palm Specifications:

  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional Edition
  • Qualcomm MSM7201 400MHz Processor
  • 320 x 320 pixel TFT (flush) touchscreen
  • Triband UMTS: 850/1900/2100MHz, Quadband GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz
  • 802.11 b/g with WPA, WPA2, and 801.1x authentication
  • Built-in GPS
  • Bluetooth 2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate
  • 256MB ROM (100MB available), 128MB RAM
  • 2.0 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom and video capture
  • 1500 mAh lithium-ion battery: 5 hours talk time, 250 hours standby
  • microSDHC support (up to 32GB)
  • 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack
  • Dimensions: 4.49″ x 2.36″ x .53″, Weight: 4.69 oz
  • Release Date: Fall 2008

While the 2.0 megapixel camera and the 320 x 320 px resolution screen are not as impressive as they once were, it is worth noting that this the first Palm Treo where the screen is flush with the rest of the device.  There will be no more cue tips and cleaning cloths being jammed into the edges of the screen in an attempt to clean off dust and grime.  With the success of Palm’s Centro, the Treo Pro has some ‘bold’ shoes to fill and we are just as excited as the rest of your are to get our hands on a review unit.  In the meantime you can take a peak at some excellent shots taken by Mathew Miller over at Zdnet to satisfy your taste buds.
