Chinese website, Alipay.com is selling one of the best knockoffs we’ve seen in a while for the Nokia N79.  At only 690 yuan ($100 USD/each), these high-quality imitation devices are pretty impressive.  Unfortunately it looks like the camera didn’t make the cut as the specs show that maximum output is 640 x 480 (VGA resolution), but we are hoping they are simply referring to video recording.

To understand the attention to detail, they have even copied the menu and S60 interface for these N79 knock offs.  With only supports for GPRS 900/1800 MHz, the N79 imitators are all about show and lack the guts of the real thing.  In any event, it is always amusing to see what the knock off community is capable of delivering with current phone prices being at their current levels.

September 1st 2008 NFL Mobile Live launches for Sprint.  Today Sprint held a live Webinar from 3PM - 4PM EST with Fox NFL Analyst Howie Long and Sprint GM Consumer Applications, JP Brocket.  The Webinar began with an overview of the upcoming NFL season by Howie Long where he began reviewing the Colts, Chargers and Giants with detailed analysis of the NFC and AFC.  The big topics of interest were the Patriots Super Bowl loss, Peyton Manning’s current health issues and the loss of Michael Strahan from the NY Giants.

The conversation shifted towards the NY Jets and Brett Farve momentarily before getting into the meat and potatoes of the topic at hand, Sprint NFL Mobile Live.  The connection was made after we learned that Howie Long has 3 sons, his oldest son Chris was drafted to the St. Louis Rams (Kyle: Florida State Baseball, Howie Senior: HS All American Lacross Player).  Howie mentioned that both of his sons, Howie Jr. and Kyle, were given phones from Sprint to follow their brother Chris’ NFL draft.  With the need for real-time updates for the NFL, Howie’s family has experienced the power of Sprint’s NFL Mobile Live application first hand and this was a big part of why he joined the Webinar.

The big focus for Sprint’s NFL Mobile Live application is live game coverage.  The key features of NFL Mobile Live as described by JP Brocket:

  • live audio and video broadcasts (8 games for video NFL Network)
  • 24 hour live streaming coverage
  • customizable (”very contextual”)
  • NFL Fantasy Companion offers a huge advantage
  • Exclusive Team Content
  • Easy to access content
  • Real-time alerts (endless alerts for players, teams, etc)

At this point in the webinar JP Brocket began to explain the interface of Sprint NFL Mobile Live with a real-time demo.  The interface was very clean and simple to understand with scrolling alerts along the bottom of the screen.  Making the application is easy to use and understand so that even the most casual fan could enjoy the experience was a major focus in developing the application.

The biggest improvement to the application is that you can listen to the audio for the game while using the interface to see the play-by-play, access stats, scores or any of the other features in the application.  While you are in the Game Center you can click a game in progress or completed game to have instant access to game video, game audio, drive analysis, stats, scoring summary and more.

One of the two big features that sparked our interest was the NFL Fantasy 2008 and NFL League Manager 2008 being incorporated directly into the NFL Mobile Live application.  Taking a focus to the Fantasy Football atmosphere offers a huge advantage when combined with the NFL Mobile Live application.

The second big feature we were really impressed by is the Video on Demand which allows you to have easy access to highlight footage.  Being able to pull up a video highlight in the middle of a football conversation is a beautiful thing, especially when you are trying to prove a point.

The webinar moved over to a Q&A session where the first question was directed to Howie Long when a fan asked him about his top Fantasy Football picks.  JP Brocket followed up with directions on getting the NFL Mobile Live application where he directed everyone to visit sprint.com/nfl.  Since the application does not launch until September 1st, both JP and Howie recommended that we visit the website until the application is available to download directly from our phones.  After September 1st users will be able to download Sprint NFL Mobile Live from the Sprint web portal (default home page) and it will be free for all subscribers with a data package.

On a good note, the Instinct, Windows Mobile devices, BlackBerry devices along with standard flip phones will all be launching NFL Mobile Live on September 1st.
