With the announcement by Sprint earlier this week that the HTC Touch Diamond would release mid-September and the Touch Pro will release October 19th, many questions have been raised about the differences between the devices. Clearly, neither device will feature the front-facing camera that is seen on the respective GSM versions, but there are still several major differences. The first major difference is the memory, the Sprint Touch Diamond features 4GB of internal storage versus the Touch Pro’s 512MB, but both devices pack 256MB of RAM. The second major difference is the keyboard, the Touch Pro’s full QWERTY keyboard adds extra thickness, matching the current thickness of the Sprint Mogul. The Touch Diamond on the other hand is just a hair thinner than the current iPhone 3G, making it a much more pocketable device. The third and final major difference is the camera: the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro both have 3.15 megapixel cameras, but only the Touch Pro features a LED flash.
If you are interested in the comparison between the two cameras, an excellent series of photographs are already published over at the Unwired:View. From what we can tell it looks like the Sprint HTC Touch Diamond actually takes the most colorful and color-saturated pictures while the Touch Pro seems to wash out pictures with excessive brightness. But you can be the judge (keep in mind that these pictures are from the GSM versions of both devices):

Despite the differences, both devices are at the top of the Windows Mobile high-end device category. They each offer different benefits and ultimately serve different users. Whether you pick up the Sprint HTC Touch Diamond this month (September 14th release date) or the Sprint Touch Pro on October 19th, you will not be disappointed. In the meantime, we hope you have a better idea of the major differences/advantages between the two devices.
Update 10/30: There seems to be some confusion over the RAM on the Touch Pro and Touch Diamond. Both devices actually feature the same amount of RAM for Sprint. Unlike the GSM versions which offer 192MB (Diamond) and 288MB (Pro), you will find 288MB for both devices with Sprint. Here are a couple shots from the Sprint Touch Diamond showing the memory:

the touch pro has a micro sd slot!!! you forgot that and the diamond doesnt
I thought they upped the thickness on the Sprint version of the touch diamond. Sprint.com has the Touch Diamond listed at 0.6″ thick, while the gsm version is 0.45″ (they increased the size to include a larger battery). From what I’ve read elsewere the Touch Pro is 0.7″ thick. I’ll take a full qwerty any day for only and extra 0.1″ in thickness.
Yea the Sprint Touch Diamond is a bit thicker than the GSM version (.45 vs 0.6 inches) as you mentioned. Using that same logic, the Touch Pro should come in at .85 inches assuming a similar difference in batteries. For reference, the Sprint Mogul is .73 inches thick.
If it was only a 0.1 inch difference between the Sprint Touch Diamond versus Touch Pro, I think that you’ll be one of many opting for the keyboard despite the Diamond’s 4GB of internal storage. I think a flash on the 3.2 mp camera makes up for the lack of storage though.
yup i just got my htc pro, and a friend of mine got a htc diamond, urm, with no disappointed at all with my pro, although its 45 percent thicker, but with the keyboard, do help me to reply customer’s sms faster and reply email faster.
i love touch screen phone but just dont like to use the stylus instead.
so i still prefer my pro, and perhaps its thicker and offer me a secure touch
Nick-
Only the Sprint Diamond is thicker than its GSM cousin, the Sprint Touch Pro is the same thickness as the GSM version. The Diamond is thicker because Sprint opted for the same higher capacity battery that is in the Touch Pro. The Touch Pro already has the higher capacity battery, so needs no size expansion. I guess Sprint didn’t want customers complaining about the poor batter life of the Diamond, so gave it a boost.
Not mentioning the micro SD slot is a huge omission. A 8 GB micro SD card (which would double the memory of the Diamond) can be had for about $20. I’ve seen a 4 GB card online with an SD adapter for as little as $8, plus you can upgrade 16 GB and even 32 GB when they come out. If you want to carry multiple cards around with you in your pocket, then you can essentially have unlimited memory.
I’m putting my money down on the Touch pro. For my usage, I need an expandable memory card slot.
I understand that Sprint has made changes to both the Touch Diamond and the Touch Pro for release on their network (so I may be incorrect here), but I believe the statement in the post about using the same amount of RAM is incorrect.
Hereare the specs on the HTC Touch Diamond.
Here are the specs on the HTC Touch Pro.
The HTC website says that the Diamond has 192MB RAM, while the Pro has 288MB RAM. This is a fairly large oversight considering how much memory the HTC devices (like the Mogul) use. I wish my Mogul had the 128MB of RAM that the HTC Touch did. I wouldn’t be running into as many problems as I am now with open applications. I wonder if we’ll see the same thing with the Diamond running out of RAM and wishing it was equipped like the Pro.
The HTC website says that the Diamond has 192MB RAM, while the Pro has 288MB RAM.
I think those are GSM specs and not for the Sprint models.
Thats is Correct for Sprint models 192 vs 288
Both Sprint models offer *288*MB of RAM, please see screenshots above.
I think HTC pro is better looking than Diamond,
Both devices actually have 288MB of ram.
Go to device information and it will tell you the actual memory available to the device, indicating 80ish for OS and graphics.
I have to say that I do have the pro at the moment, and i’m happy with the phone but honestly for a girl/women it is almost too bulky because our pockets and things arent that big for the phone so im thinking about exchanging for the diamond, the touch keyboard is not that hard to get use to because i’ve even use it on the pro.
Does the Touch Diamond have a full qwerty keyboard on the touch screen or will the keyboard resemble a regular phone. i hope i said it right.
IT would have the full qwerty virtual
all this is so confusing, im planning on getting one of the two phones but i dont know which is better. Which do you guys suggest is the better of the two?? TOUCH PRO or the TOUCH DIAMOND
Does the sprint HTC Touch Pro have a sim card slot?
I like the phone but its not available thru Tmobile.. =/
Maybe can get sprint phone and unlock it?
Sprint phones are CDMA and do not use a SIM card, they may work on Verizon.
You will need to find an unlocked GSM version of the phone, be sure to inquire about that feature when purchasing.
Well, I personaly purchased the HTC Touch Pro and don’t get me wrong in my opinion its a great device and believe me when I say this I mean it – I’ve used blackberries, Instinct, Q’s Q9C’s all the PDA S P R I N T put out in the past 3 years.
HTC Touch Pro’s – Touch flow 3D is Excellent but its more beautifull than it is convenient to use and trust me you’ll understand me only if you have used SPB Mobile Shell in the past. But I think its worth the trade off and eventually you get used to it , I did within a week.
In conclusion for those of you who don’t know which one to get I Suggest you get the HTC Diamond, Here is why.
For the week that I had The HTC Touch Pro, I forgot the phone had a slide out keyboard, the virtual keyboard is sufficient, never used the slide out keyboard. Secondly Honestly the FLASH on the camera 99% of the times its used as a flash light. HARDWARE wise the phones are identical TRUST me I researched than both Well. Today I should receive my DIAMOND….hope my opinion helps and if you have any question feel free to email me.
P.S I forgot one more important thing to mention the Sound from the earpiece the speakerphone and over all sound quality is better on the DIAMOND. Sound Quality on the PRO is awful.
I am about to upgrade the HTC Touch Pro. I now own the HTC Mogul 6800 and I am replacing it because, I have had to replace it three times. Any advice out there? Please help.
CEReed,
I’ve had my Mogul 1 year now, I’m tough on phones… perfect & tough, why have you had to replace it three times????
The leveling system on the Touch Pro is unreal. Fun playing games by tilting the phone. It comes with a game that vibrates a little when the ball hits the side… amazing! Video out port with a 16GB micro SD on the fastest Sprint network… WOW
The first time all the keys didn’t respond at all and they couldn’t figure out why so they replaced it. The second time it just locked again Sprint couldn’t figure it out and the third time it wouldn’t hold a charge. It would say 100% and drop from 70% to 5% in minutes and it locked with what appeared to be a program language.
This was a bad time for this to happen I was in Dallas for my daughters funeral so just think, it was all I had to communicate with family and friends from around the world. I was not happy.
So far I am pleased but, I have to test it as many of you have.
Thanks
i love the diamond even thought it doesnt have a key board which i really dont like it,i think the diamond is perfect for a girl like me,i can put it in my purse and it wont bother me because of the size,i deffinitelly like more the diamond!!
I have had the pleasure of using the Mogul, Diamond and Pro. I had flashed the Rom on the Mogul to a custom one and the phone ran alot better then stock. The phone was nice but the refurb ones are crap-Sprint finally gave me a new one and it worked flawless. It was a little slow though and bulky.
The diamond is a nicer phone. I like the smaller size and the user interface is fast and easy. The on screen keyboard is so easy to use you don’t even need a slid out keyboard. At first I thought I would want the slid out but after using the Diamond I don’t miss the mogul at all. The camera takes awesome pics despite not having a flash. The strikes against this phone is no SD card slot, no flash on camera, and the back cover color.
The Pro looks alot better with the chrome on the sides and a nice silver backing unlike the nasty red color on the diamond. I figured I would use the flash on the camera but sometimes its too bright to be of good use. The only plus is the SD card, the back color on the cover and the flash on the camera. The size is thick-about the same as my mogul. The diamond is thinner and feels nice in your hands. The strikes on this phone are the size and the camera doesn’t take as nice of pics as the diamond.
I was tossed as too which phone to keep, but I think I am going to be selling the Pro and keeping the diamond. Since the diamond is smaller, I don’t plan on needing all 4gb of space and the chrome looks nice on the Pro-but I bet it will fade or flake after time. It comes down to personal preference as to which phone is better for you.
I just finished using a HTC Touch Diamond for two weeks and have switched to the Touch Pro. So far, there is truly no comparison.
The Diamond hung several times in the short time I had it. It would become unresponsive and simply vibrate. The screen had a few areas that the touch did not work very well on, and (to me) the on screen keyboard was impossible to type on without a stylus. The Diamond was a bit sluggish at times. The power button was difficult to use and the reset button was hidden behind the battery door. Memory was fixed at 4 mb. Really, the only thing that I liked about it over the Pro was the size. And, to be honest it really isn’t that much different. Call quality was good but voices were a bit muted.
On the other hand, the Touch Pro has not hung at all in a week. The battery life seems better. The keyboard is absolutely wonderful. There are a few included programs with the Pro that are cool (that did not come with the diamond) like: Jetcet Print 5 and MP3 Trimmer. The reset is a hole (button) on the bottom of the device that’s easily pressed with the stylus. The overall device seems quicker and even the screen seems more responsive. I’ve installed a 16 gb micro sd card so space will no longer be an isssue. The camera seems better and includes a flash. The call quality is excellent.
Well there you have it. My advice is to not waste your time on the Touch Diamond. Get the Pro… it’s the best phone/pda I’ve ever used. I really like it.
hi im looking at getting either the htc diamond or the pro but im not sure which to get i love my music and the diamond has a 4gb internal memory but i dont know which is louder and what has better batter life ? and which is more durable because i can have clumsy fazes so i mite drop it ocasionly and what is better for gaming and pictures ?? if you can answer any of these qestions please reply to me thanx
Yeah me too! I’m torn between this two phones. On one hand, the Diamond is thinner, lighter and cheaper, but on the other, the Pro has more memory and doesn’t seem to hang that much.
The Touch Pro is a tough sell right now since the Touch Pro 2 was just released for Sprint. The only gripe I really have about the Touch Pro is that the phone often lags when switching from landscape to portrait mode (sliding out the keyboard). One thing to keep in mind is the Touch Pro2 comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 like the existing Touch Pro, but it will be upgraded to WM 6.5. A lot of people are talking about Windows Mobile 7 for 2010, but as far as the next 6 months go it is really about WM 6.5 updates.
There is one significant difference between the Touch Pro and the Touch Pro 2if you have an old Sero plan. The Touch Pro 2 requires you to get a new plan according to the Sprint person I chatted with today… That would increase my bill about $10 a month… so I might as well go with the HTC Hero.
