T-mobile G1 Initially Available in Black and Brown $399.99 Retail Price

Well despite the announcement that the G1 would be available for current T-mobile customers for $179.99 it looks like 2 year upgrade eligibility is a major requirement.  When checking our account today, the best price we can get the G1 if we order online is $299.99 after a $100 instant discount for ordering online.  There will be two color choices at launch date (October 22nd) Black and Brown, despite Google showing off the White color choice at the Press Event earlier today.

So why do I have to signup for a new 2 year locked in contract if I don’t get the discount? Fail.

Exactly my logic, but this is the same strategy being used by At&t and the iPhone 3G. Except At&t charges you full retail for the iPhone 3G plus you have the 2 year contract, at least T-mobile is giving a $100 off when purchased online.

I am one of the fortunate that was just ready to upgrade anyway so I got mine for $211.85 after tax and $18 upgrade fee. I am a little upset that I was told that a data plan wans not needed and then when buying mine found I couldn’t check out without paying $25 a month extra. But then again, what good is a G1 phone without the data plan!

The upgrade window, according to previous Tmob info was 11 months if on a one year or 22 months if on two year… I’m due up in December, which means Oct. 22 would be within the renewal window, but Tmob doesn’t seem to recognize that- it seems fixated on the payment date, instead of the deliver date… d’oh!

yeah, the $299 price was a deal breaker for me, particularly after the promise of $179 for tmobile users. Stupid me. I took that to mean ALL tmobile users. i’m currently in mid-contract, and have been with tmobile for 10 consecutive years. the fact that currently-contracted (and long-time) customers are being punished with a higher price tag is unfair and ridiculous, and reminds me of how I despise telecoms. Plus, what the hell is this $18 upgrade fee? Upgrades have always been free with a new contract. Although I love this phone, tmobile is a greedy telecom like any other, so I’m sticking with the Nokia N810 and Skype for now. But, if another company comes out with a better plan for customers, I have no loyalty to tmobile anymore, just as they clearly have no loyalty to long-time customers.

I work for Tmobile and the way to get it at 179.99 is that you have to be already able to get a full discount and agree to a 2yr contract and add a data plan to get it at that price and also you have to be a existing postpaid customer to get it early by presale. Now the other people who are not elgible for a full have to pay 299.99 with a two year and a data plan. That is how the pricing goes and this is for the presale.
