Fring brings Skype and VoIP services to iPhone

by Nick Marshall

Fring is now officially part of the AppStore, bringing official Voice-over-IP service to the iPhone.  Without the need to jailbreak your iPhone and risk ‘bricking’ your device, you can now complete Skype calls from your phone.  Besides Skype functionality, Fring also lets you chat over IM services such as MSN, GoogleTalk, AIM, Yahoo, Twitter, ICQ and Fring’s own service.

Since Fring only allows VoIP calls via WiFi, the software falls in line with Apple’s regulations made public at the iPhone SDK.  Fring looks to achieve what Truphone attempted to do, but due to Truphone’s limited functionality to its own set of services rather than the more popular PC based service, Skype, they failed.  While we start testing out Fring for our iPhone, go ahead and give it a shot in the AppStore and see if it lives up to the hype.
