A Q3 2008 net loss of $34 million has shaken up 2009 plans for Sony Ericsson. The plan is simple, cut 20 percent of the company’s range of handsets and if necessary remove 2,000 jobs to increase profitability. With the economic downturn and the banking crisis hitting all sectors including mobile phone manufacturers, Sony Ericsson’s president, Mr. Komiyama said, ”Consumer confidence is less almost day by day.”

Despite the disappointing performance in Q3 2008, we are in favor of less devices. Mr Komiyama said that he hoped Sony Ericsson could return to profitable growth in the second half of next year. As long as that means a US NAM-spec XPERIA X1 we are all in favor, at worst we’ll see stronger R&D for the 80 percent of devices still being released for SE.
