Mobile IE 6 coming to China Mobile’s Samsung Omnia

article Nick Marshall

The customized version of the Samsung Omnia running Windows Mobile will be making an appearance on China Mobile with an interesting twist: mobile IE 6.  This will make the Samsung Omnia the first Windows Mobile device to run the updated mobile browser and coincide with Microsoft’s plan of targeting emerging markets.  Scott Rockfeld, Microsoft’s director of Windows Mobile, said, “Our target is not to convert existing users of the competing phones like the iPhone or Google’s Android. We want to grow faster than the market.”

Rockfeld said Microsoft has brought the “full rendering engine of IE6 to the phone”, which is expected to deliver a surfing experience on the mobile that is closer to that of the desktop. Users can also view rich elements such as flash “straight from the browser”, he said.
