By now just about everyone has either seen an Apple commercial demonstrating the iPhone and iPod Touch gaming capabilities. Until now, this capable gaming platform had been limited to our portable devices, but that is all about to change. Freeverse, makers of the iPhone game Moto Chaser, have developed a concept demonstration that allows the iPhone to be used as a quasi-gaming console. Using the hidden MPTVOutWindow class that was discovered in the iPhone SDK by Erica Sadun, Freeverse was able to create a version of their Moto Chaser game that can be played back on the TV.
The proof is in the pudding, so let’s go ahead and cut to the chase. The video below says it all:
The game is displayed on the TV using the video-out cable while the iPhone’s motion sensors handle the controls. The bottom line is that this concept turns the iPhone into a very capable portable gaming console and just one more notch for Apple belt. Now for the anti-Apple groups out there, don’t worry there are some limitations to this concept. The second generation iPod Touch was only able to maintain 20fps and since it has a faster process than the iPhone, it will be quite a while before we see any standalone iPhone games for the TV.
