Earlier this week Chinese manufacturer Huawei entered the Android Open Alliance and announced plans to launch smartphones running the Android OS in 2009. According to a spokesperson for Huawei, “there would be no launch apartheid where some nations were excluded from the first round of access to the phone,” which means if Australia got the phone later it would be the choice of the telcos and not Huawei. At the moment Huawei can confirm that their first Android Smartphone will launch in Q3 2009 and their devices can be ordered and developed for Australian operators based on any such requests. With the Kogan Agora launching on Jan 29th in Australia it looks like 2009 could be the year of Android for the land down under. [Cnet AU]
