Well I should rephrase that, the upcoming S60 OS supports symmetric multiprocessing, but using an iPhone for the past few months makes any type of multiprocessing that much more significant.  This symmetric multiprocessing or SMP as the Symbian Foundation calls it lets more than one CPU processor share a computer’s workload as efficiently as possible according to the Symbian Foundation blog.

Saying that the upcoming S60 OS supports SMP is one thing, but the Symbian Foundation has hardware tests to prove it thanks to a ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore and HSPA data.  This sexy new hardware is capable of handling features such as a 1080p camcorder, 100 hours audio playback time, and 10 hours of HD video playback time.  The fun doesn’t stop here as the hardware can also push TV-out via HDMI, accelerated 3D graphics and a 2 jaw dropping WVGA displays (960 x 854 pixels, each!).  To really put some icing on the cake, the Symbian Foundation says that this system is also capable of responding to touch interface on two displays at the same time.

If worst comes to worst at least the Symbian Foundation will have a hardware and software platform to take on the Nintendo DS!
