WWDC 2009 is currently underway and the announcements keep coming and coming. The iPhone 3.0 Software was the first big bombshell for iPhone users so we’ll get right into it and begin by breaking down the announcements.
- Cut, Copy and Paste (works across apps)
- Undo Support
- Developer API
- Cocoa Touch spport for Text
- Landscape keyboard support to ‘key apps’, not just Safari like it is now.
- 29 Carriers will support MMS at launch. At&t will be ready at the end of the Summer.
- Spotlight: allows you to search anything on your phone, including apps.
- iTunes Movie Rentals and Purchases directly from the iPhone.
- Tethering: You will now be able to share your iPhone data connection with your computer!
- Tethering works over USB or Bluetooth. It requires carrier support and there are currently 22 partners in 44 countries. At&t was not mentioned in the list.
- iPhone OS 3.0 runs JavaScript almost 3 times faster. Supports HTTP streaming audio and video.
- Autofill is now built into Safari for remembering usernames and password logins to websites.
- OS 3.0 now supports more than 30 languages.
- HTML 5 standards are a big focus. OS 3.0 adds support for new standards like audio and video tags.
- Find My iPhone: You can login to MobileMe on any browser and it will show you where your iPhone is located. You can also send a message to the phone which can play a sound whether or not the phone is in silent mode. If the phone ends up being lost or stolen you can send a remote wipe command which will delete all of your data.
- The SDK now has more than 1000 new APIs
- Free apps will remain free.
- Apps can now deliver peer-to-peer gaming over Bluetooth.
- Google Maps can now be embedded into applications and developers are allowed to build turn-by-turn apps.
- iPhone OS 3.0 Push notifications: There are now 3 types of notifications, push, text alerts, numerical badges and sound alerts.
- Gameloft showcased a racing application which lets you play music from your iTunes collection in the app.
- Airstrip Technologies showcased how iPhones can be used for health care with a real-time stream of a patients heart rate monitor.
- TomTom has put together TomTom navigation for the iPhone. Complete with Advanced Planning, POIs and all the features you expect on a standard unit.
- Tom Tom navigation for the iPhone offers text-to-speech and there will also be a TomTom car kit. The car kit will include a suction cup and charging cable so that the iPhone is fully powered when driving. This application supports both Landscape and Portrait mode.
- iPhone and iPod OS 3.0 software release date: June 17th. It will be free for all current iPhone owners and $9.95 for iPod Touch owners.
- iPhone 3GS is the new name for the third generation iPhone.
- 3-megapixel autofocus camera
- 7.2Mbps HSDPA support
- The fastest most powerful iPhone yet: up to 2 times faster across the phone, but not with everything
- 3-megapixel camera supports macro mode as close as 10cm away and better low light performance.
- VGA video recording (640 x 480 resolution) at 30fps is now confirmed!
- Videos have 4 options: Email Video, MMS, Send to MobileMe and Send to YouTube.
- Voice Control: you can now make calls with your voice and you can control iTunes by voice. You can now ask your iPhone what is playing and it will reply with the title and artist information.
- New settings on the iPhone 3GS: it can read text, zoom in the display, invert black and white
- Built in Digital Compass: new compass app, integrated into Maps, orient to heading, Developer APIs.
- All new iPhone 3GSs will have hardware encryption and improved battery life.
- iPhone 3GS now has 5 hours of 3G talk time, 9 hours of WiFi Internet. It is a greener device with 23% smaller packaging and it is the most powerful iPhone yet.
- $199 for the 16GB version and $299 for the 32GB version. Two color choices remain the same: black and white.
