Palm is prepared to take on WebOS hacking with full force

Palm is prepared to take on WebOS hacking with full force

In a matter of days following the Palm Pre release we saw the first evidence that WebOS was susceptible to unauthorized ROMs, allowing both games to be ported to the operating system as well as tethering.  With no official tethering support from Sprint, this hacked method of tethering seemed to be a godsend for the mobile world.  Well ladies and gentlemen it looks like Palm is following their WebOS child very closely and issued a threat to have the Pre Dev Wiki shutdown if they post any information about data tethering during Sprint’s exclusivity period:

We have been politely cautioned by Palm that any discussion of tethering during the Sprint exclusivity period (and perhaps beyond-we don’t know yet) will probably cause Sprint to complain to Palm, and if that happened then Palm would be forced to react against the people running the IRC channel and this wiki.

Since the Palm Pre checks for system updates every 7 days and all updates are mandatory since they are downloaded in the background within 2 days of being available, Palm will be aggressively combating any WebOS hacking.  At this point it does not look like Palm’s WebOS will be friendly towards any sort of hacking or homebrew so go ahead and cross that off your checklist when comparing the OS to Apple’s iPhone.
