The Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas this week was a wake-up call for Apple and their beloved iPhone. Security experts Charlie Miller, Independent Security Evaluators researcher, and Collin Mulliner, a Ph.D. student at the University of Berlin, demonstrated a flaw in the iPhone OS that allows hackers to launch a Denial of Service (DoS) attack or take control of a victim’s device by a simple text message.
The security flaw stems from the way in which the iPhone handles the SMS protocol used for text messages. Quick on the heels of the security flaw being exposed, European carrier O2 announced that Apple will release a fix for iPhone users on Saturday via the iTunes store.
Before you go jumping on the Apple bashing bandwagon, Charlie Miller warned that this SMS hack could be carried out on Windows Mobile and Android as well. To Google’s credit, they have confirmed that they took the information from Miller and Mulliner to heart and have already fixed the threat on Android.
