Palm WebOS 1.2.1 now available with iTunes fix

WebOS 1.2 is already yesterday’s news as early this morning 1.2.1 updates began downloading over the air on many of your Palm Pre’s.  This 38MB update comes with a few improvements but most importantly it fixes the iTunes media sync issue as well as MS Exchange support.  Apparently Exchange 2007 users could no longer sync their email, calendar, contacts or tasks after updating to webOS 1.2 so they should be quite relieved.  Another feature worth noting is that Media Sync now allows the synchronizing of photo albums and maintains the album structure in the Photos app.

If you are really interested in how Palm was able to restore iTunes syncing on the Pre you should know that this battle is never ending.  When you connect your Palm Pre to your computer in Media Sync Mode, your computer sees USB Vendor ID: 0×05ac (Apple, Inc).  Clearly Palm has set its Manufacturer label to Apple and Changing the USB Product ID to 0×1209 to avoid issues.  We’ll hold off on passing judgement on this issue, but sooner or later the USB-IF is going to need to become more difficult if Apple wants to stop this from happening again.
