Web-based Widgets coming to the BlackBerry platform

Fresh from a press event in Waterloo we bring you breaking news for the BlackBerry platform.  RIM has announced that they will release a Software Development Kit (SDK) for creating web-based widgets on BlackBerry OS.  The new APIs will allow access to all of the core functions on the BlackBerry including email, calendar, gps, media player, documents and the push technology.  For an early peak at the fun in store for BlackBerry owners you can test out the Smartphone Simulator and BlackBerry Widget SDK beta.  They have also put up 3 sample web widgets that you can download and test immediately: Hello World, Push Sample and Upcoming Appointments

Direct Download to the BlackBerry Widget SDK 1.0 Beta 1 here.  Direct Download for the BlackBerry OS 5.0 Simulator here.
