HTC Hero now available on Sprint.com for $179.99 after MIR

If you didn’t take advantage of the Best Buy Reward Zone early access to the Sprint HTC Hero and you don’t like the idea of dealing with a Sprint retail store then Sprint.com is your one-stop shop to picking up your new toy. The Sprint HTC Hero just went live on the carrier’s website for $279.99 before $100 Mail-in Rebate which is exactly what we were expecting. There were however a few surprises on Friday for those picking up their Hero a couple days early, no Android 1.6 Donut. Yes friends the Sprint HTC Hero is running Android 1.5 Cupcake and apparently we might not see the 1.6 OTA update until sometime in 2010. If you were thinking that you might just skip the Hero and head for the Moment, keep in mind that this Android 1.6 news came from a Samsung representative at CTIA so both devices will be in the same boat.

Oh and just in case you were still wondering whether your SERO plan or non-Everything Data plan would work with the Hero, the answer is no.  You will need to switch plans in order to activate your HTC Hero, regardless of whether you upgrade or purchase the phone for full retail.  This also leads us to the third piece of bad news, full retail price for the HTC Hero is $479.99 through Sprint despite the rumors that it would be $329.99 and the information on Sprint’s ad which listed $429.99.

As a US Sprint customer, my options have been mostly limited to WinMobile, Blackberry, and Palm. Not interested in blackberry … although i currently own a Palm Centro … although it is a reasably good phone, i have not been suitably impressed with the OS or freeware apps . Yes i said it FREEWARE. There … WinMobile had the market cornered! My mogul was a wonderful little computer … despite the frequent need for soft resets … but a really cruddy phone. When i read about Android i got all excited … but … alas no phones on the Sprint network. Share your review with me at http://www.HTC-Hero.com a site for HTC Hero fans.
