Sorry for the delay this morning guys but the site redesign is taking a bit longer than expected. In any event, we have quite a bit of breaking news to cover so let’s get right into it. Starting things off this morning At&t announced their Q3 2009 numbers and reported that they added 4.3 million postpaid 3G integrated wireless devices to their network. Of those 4.3 million units, 3.2 million were iPhone activations which helped the carrier reach its largest quarterly total to date. In case you are wondering At&t labels integrated devices as handset with QWERTY or virtual keyboards in addition to voice functionality.
Nokia has decided to sue Apple for infringement of UTMS, GSM and WLAN patents. With over 10,000 patent families in its portfolio, Nokia was quick to realize that Apple had not chosen to license many patents which are considered industry standards. To be more specific Nokia notes that the patents cover ‘wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption’ and infringed by all Apple iPhone (Classic, 3G, and 3GS).

Dell’s Android MID made an appearance on a Vietnamese mobile site running Android 2.0 and showing off 3G/WiFi connectivity. The device sports a 5-inch WVGA multitouch capacitive display, 5-megapixel camera with dual-led flash, bluetooth, microSD and a 1300 mAh battery. Other than the obvious battery concerns the device doesn’t look half bad.
U.S. Cellular announced two new devices from Samsung, the Trill and Caliber. The Trill is an audio-centric slider with 1.3 megapixel camera, bluetooth, and 1GB of built-in storage with microSD expansion. It is available for $89.95 on contract after rebate. The Caliber is features a TouchWiz setup with full HTML browser, 3-megapixel camera, WQVGA display and is available for $49.95 on contract.
And last this morning is news that comes to us via the Apple Store. The TomTom navigation Car Kit is now available for online ordering in the US and the UK. The catch 22 is that the kit is selling for $120 and it does not include the $100 TomTom app you will still need to purchase from the App Store. The reason behind the outrageous price tag is that the car kit actually has a built-in GPS unit in the mounting kit so that when At&t service is unavailable you still can navigate to your destination. Call us crazy but $220 could cover the cost of a quality standalone GPS unit that wouldn’t risk having our iPhone fly off the dash and out our open window on a sharp turn.
