Both Motorola and Research in Motion have been sued by Klausner Technologies for allegedly infringing on a visual voicemail patent. Klausner Technologies says that the Motorola lawsuit is based on the recent introduction of its new “CLIQ” mobile phone, while RIM is being sued over its BlackBerry Bold 9700 handset. The company said that the two firms other handsets are already covered by Klausner Technologies Visual Voicemail patent licenses granted to mobile operators.
Klausner Technologies currently has 24 Visual Voicemail patent licensees, including major U.S. and European wireless service providers, cell phone manufacturers, and cable/VOIP providers, as well as other providers of Visual Voicemail services. The suit has been filed in federal court in the Eastern District of Texas by the California law firm of Dovel & Luner. Klausner Technologies owns 25 patents covering the basic Visual Voicemail feature. The company has previously sued AT&T, Apple and Google for patent violations. All three companies later settled out of court.
