There’s no telling what name the next-generation iPhone will carry, but what we can tell is that the device exists and is currently listed as the “iPhone3,1″. Whether you call it the iPhone3,1, iPhone 4G, iPhone 4GS, iPhone 3GS^2 or just iPhone 4, one thing is for certain and that’s the buzz building across the net. The speculation surrounding the iPhone 3,1 began Sunday morning when Pandav, an iPhone developer, informed MacRumors that they spotted usage records for an unreleased iPhone model. Earlier this year before the iPhone 3GS was released we spotted usage records referencing iPhone 2,1 so the reference to iPhone 3,1 clearly indicates an unreleased device.
As of today the rumors about the next-generation iPhone point towards a multi-core processor to boost performance as well as Verizon CDMA compatibility. With At&t’s iPhone contract expiring later this year and Verizon milking the Motorola Droid marketing blitz all the way to the bank, the future of Apple’s smartphone will be filling headlines throughout 2010.
[Update: 1/13] New rumors are beginning to circulate suggesting the iPhone 4G/4GS will feature an OLED screen, flash and a removable battery. Some rumors even suggest that iChat will be incorporated thanks to a front-facing camera for video calls. The most ridiculous claim so far is that the iPhone 4G/4GS will feature a digital TV tuner which really seems improbably considering the value Apple places on their iTunes media content which covers nearly all relevant TV programming. Below is one of the latest renderings of the upcoming iPhone 4G/4GS compliments of pestaola.gr.
