The recent sweep of stolen iPhones throughout Russia is just the beginning of the attack on fake or bad IMEI numbers.  Telcoms will continue to block handsets using fake or no IMEI number, but now that your device no longer works what should you do?  If you happen to live in Russia your solution can be found for Rs. 200 at any authorized COAI & MSAI center where they’ll change your IMEI number in just under 30 minutes.  In order to change your IMEI number you will need proof of ID such as a Voter ID card, Driver’s License, PAN Card or Passport.

To check to see if your IMEI number is genuine simply press *#06# on your phone and then send the your IMEI number as a SMS to 53232.  Premium SMS charges apply, but at least you can verify your new IMEI number before you leave the store.  If you are looking for a way to check your IMEI number online we recommend taking a look at the IMEI Validity Tool here.
