If you’re a webOS user feeling a bit left out of the Visual Voicemail phenomenon sweeping Apple, RIM and Android as of late, fear not.  Thanks to the guys over at Pre Central we are pleased to bring you the Visual Voicemail tutorial for the Palm Pre or Pixi using Google Voice.  Unfortunately for those of you who do not currently have a Google Voice Account you will need to find a friend who has an available invite code to get started.

Assuming you have found a way to get your hands on your own Google Voice account your first order of business will be setting up your cell phone via the settings tab.  After adding your phone number and accepting the phone call for verification your next step will be activating Google Voicemail on your device.  Simply click the link to “activate Google Voicemail on this phone” on the settings / phone page when logged into GV.

At this point you can jump back to the main settings screen and decide whether or not you want Google Voice to ring when you get a call.  You will also need to check the box next to each phone number you want to ring before going to voicemail.  If you are just trying to get visual voicemail then uncheck the box next to your phone.  There’s a whole bunch of additional settings that you can play with at your leisure including SMS and a Voicemail PIN, but those are completely up to you.

The next step is to go into the settings / Voicemail & SMS tab to check the SMS alert box and check the ‘Transcribe Voicemails’ box.  At the moment webOS does not support push notifications for 3rd party apps so the SMS alert could be your lifeline if your Google Voice app fails to notify you of a voice message.

The last and final step is choosing an app to handle your visual voicemail.  The three most popular choices are GDial Pro (or homebrew-edition of Gdial Pro), Visual Voicemail, or DKGoogleVoice.  Simply setup your Google account in whichever program you choose and you are done.  You’re voicemails will now be sent to Google Voice instead of the Sprint Voicemail system and you’ll be able to hear them back in your visual voicemail app.
