The Motorola Droid X might be landing first, but later this Summer Verizon Wireless subscribers will have their chance at the Motorola Droid 2 – the second generation of the infamous Droid and yes, there will be an updated keyboard. At the moment several sources have confirmed the device and just yesterday a Gizmodo reader had a chance to use the phone at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Canada, CA.
The Motorola Droid 2 will be running Android 2.1 which is very odd considering the Droid X is confirmed to run Android 2.2 and the Droid 2 is expected to be released following that device. The Gizmodo Reader from JPL asked the Verizon rep which version of Android would come with the device,
Verizon representatives told me that it most probably wouldn’t be coming with that on it and would probably have Froyo (Android 2.2) plain (without any skin). She said that if it does come out with Android 2.1, it will get updated very quickly.
The screen remains 3.7-inches as does the 5-megapixel camera, but the processor has been upgraded. Early reports suggested the Droid 2 would use a 750MHz OMAP processor, but we now know the device will actually sport a 1GHz processor, unfortunately we do not know if it will be based on the Snapdragon chipset,
The representative did tell me that it had a 1 Ghz processor, but she didnt say what kind.
When it comes to memory the Motorola Droid 2 will come with an 8GB microSD card pre-installed along with 8GB of internal storage for a total of 16GB. The official model number is A955, but internally Verizon refers to the device as the “G4DR 4722″.
There will be no HDMI port nor a front-facing camera on the Motorola Droid 2, but that only confirms early reports so no big surprise there. Like the HTC EVO 4G, the Droid 2 is rumored to offer WiFi tethering which makes sense since the feature is already available on another Verizon smartphone, the Palm Pre Plus.
You can expect to hear more news about the Verizon Wireless Motorola Droid 2 in the coming weeks. In the meantime the Motorola Droid X should become the focus of Verizon’s marketing camapaign due to the manufacturing difficulties of the 3.7-inch AMOLED display on the Droid Incredible. So who plans on taking a pass on the Droid X in favor of a hardware keyboard-equipped Motorola Droid 2?
