Here’s some exciting news for you webOS fans, HP has officially announced the first major update to webOS since 2009, webOS 2.0. The first device to run the new and improved webOS 2.0 will be the Palm Pre 2, a device arriving Friday in France from SFR and in the coming months in the United States from Verizon Wireless and in Canada. Existing Palm Pre owners you will not be left in the dark as HP has assured us an over the air (OTA) update will be arriving in the “coming months”. The major concern we have about the Palm Pre 2 at this point in the game is what happens to US developers who want to explore the Pre 2, but do not have service through Verizon Wireless? According to HP, Developers will be able to purchase unlocked UMTS versions of Pre 2 in the United States to use as a canvas to build the next generation of webOS applications and services. More information about the purchase program will be available at http://developer.palm.com/devdevices.html.
Now let’s breakdown the core features and specs of the upcoming Palm Pre 2. The Pre 2 features a 1 GHz processor, the first for a Palm Phone. A 5-megapixel camera, 3.1-inch multitouch screen with a vibrant 24-bit color, 320×480 resolution HVGA display, GPS, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, WiFi b/g, 16GB of internal memory, 3.5mm headphone jack and Bluetooth round out the core features. The Pre 2 weighs in at 5.1 ounces and measures 2.35 x 3.96 x 0.67 inches.
