T-mobile data network is fastest in top 100 markets

When it comes to wireless data bragging rights, T-mobile can add another notch to its belt. An independent third party study gave the carrier top honors in its wireless date performance survey based on the top 100 US markets. First HSPA+ becomes an official 4G technology and now the carrier is validated has having the fastest data network — LTE and WiMax are suddenly no longer the talk of the town.

As always, there’s a catch with any good news. The independent third party survey was conducted between June 2010 and November 2010 so Verizon’s LTE network was likely excluded. Sprint however, was fully functioning with their 4G WiMax network so despite the lack of Verizon, T-mobile still beat an established 4G competitor. The take away from the survey is that if T-mobile can eclipse WiMax in its current state, the margin should only widen in 2011 when T-mobile upgrades to offer 42Mbps capacity (up from 21Mbps).

The race for the nation’s fastest 4G network will be heated in 2011. For the moment it looks like Verizon’s LTE network will be T-mobile’s strongest competitor, but only time will tell. Let the games begin. Full press release below.
