Two big breakthroughs have been announced over on the official Google Mobile Blog. The first is that Google Search by voice is now available on all Nokia S60 phones which means whether you are a fan of the E or N Series you can finally skip the 12-digit keypad and submit your search by speaking into your phone. The second big announcement is that Google Voice by search now supports Mandarin Chinese on Nokia S60 devices as well. Unfortunately support for Mandarin Chinese is not available on other devices at the moment but Google vows to add the new speech recognition to products on other mobile platforms including Android and iPhone very soon.
Today was the first time I had the pleasure of checking out the Ovi Daily App blog despite having owned Nokia handsets for the past 10 years. Granted the Ovi Store is a more recent endeavor for Nokia and my candybar 6XXX series device could not make use of todays apps, but nonetheless the Ovi Daily App blog is a very useful resource. Taking the spotlight for Monday is a free application called FontFlip that promises to “change the user interface font on your phone making it more appealing and fun to use”. In short the application delivers as promised as you can see from the video above and it is compatible with all S60 3rd and 5th edition devices. The only caveat with the app is that the fonts that come bundled with the free version expire after two days so you’ll need to purchase the fonts you’d like to keep for $1.99/each in the Ovi Store.
It’s a sad day for those of us who enjoyed Nokia’s N-Gage gaming service. In a post on the official N-Gage blog news came this morning that Nokia will no longer publish new games for the N-Gage platform and instead games will be provided via its Ovi Store. Current N-gage games can be purchased until [...]
A full QWERTY handset that blends a high-end cellphone with an ultra-portable laptop is exactly what Nokia was going for with the N900. This touchscreen device runs the Linux-based Maemo 5 OS and manages to pack 32GB of internal storage (up to 48GB), an ARM Cortex-A8 processor, OpenGL ES 2.0, up to 1GB of application [...]
Sure the N86 features a 8-megapixel camera while the N97 retains the successful 5-megapixel lens we’ve seen on previous N series devices, but if both phones have dual-LED flash could the N86 still offer a significant advantage? To answer the question our friends at Mobile World Innovation have put together a photo gallery comparing the [...]
So you have a bit of Maemo envy after seeing the ultra slick interface on the Nokia N900, but you just ponied down $600 on a shiny new N97 and you aren’t sure what to do. How about bringing those default wallpapers to your N97 to help freshen up your device and get it showtime ready. [...]
Nokia’s Ovi Store is the one-stop shop for games, apps, ringtones and just about everything else you can think of for your Nokia device. While it is not available on all phones, those of us using a N or E series device have become very familiar with the software as it has become an integral [...]
Good things come in small packages and this is exactly the case for the Nokia N97 Mini. Announced back in September at Nokia World this little brother to the N97 packs most of the same features, but in a smaller pocket-friendly package. You keep the 5-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera with dual LED flash and lose [...]
The Nokia E75 is not the only dual slider in the Nokia device lineup these days, say hello to the red Nokia 5730 XpressMusic. This multimedia-oriented smartphone comes in four color choices (red/black, black/monochrome, grey/blue, black/pink) and if you can live with the S60 3rd edition OS (non-touchscreen) instead of the 5th edition of the [...]
If a full touchscreen Nokia handset is on your horizon look no further than the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic. With a full touchscreen interface, 2.9-inch screen running at 640 x 360 pixels, 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, and support for up to 16GB memory cards (4GB included), the 5530 XM is a feature rich [...]
