After recently becoming a finalist at the BlackBerry Developer Conference, FlyCast’s mobile network is now ready to support the BlackBerry Curve, BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Storm smartphones. The FlyCast network is the first specifically designed application to deliver radio, video and podcasts over mobile broadband and WiFi networks to mobile devices. The software is positioned as a free alternative to satellite radio and was first launched in January 2008.
This version of FlyCast for BlackBerry works on BlackBerry Bold phones with OS version 4.6, on BlackBerry Curve phones with OS 4.5(Sprint, Verizon and other CDMA networks) and OS 4.3 (AT&T, T-Mobile and other 3G networks) and BlackBerry Storm phones with OS 4.7. If you need to upgrade your phone’s OS, please do so before installing and using the FlyCast application.
The FlyCast Mobile Broadcast Network includes over 1000 stations from top terrestrial and web broadcasters, including Entercom, Cox Radio, AccuRadio, 977 Music, 1.FM, 1Club and radioIO. The network provides unsurpassed quality of service and paradigm-shifting features, like StreamSlipTM, which allows users to continue to listen to a station even during extended periods without a connection; Top of the HourTM, which allows latecomers to listen from the beginning of news, talk and sports radio shows; SongSkipTM, which allows listeners to skip to the next song on certain webcast stations and pause on all stations. The BlackBerry smartphone version of FlyCast supports background play, allowing users to listen while they use their handset for other functions, and also supports playback through Bluetooth® stereo headsets.

November 4th is coming and Best Buy Mobile locations have already begun receiving demo units of the BlackBerry Bold along with place markers. We know that At&t stores will offer the Bold for $299.99 on November 4th for new 2 year service agreements, but how about Best Buy? Well for starters new 2 year service agreements will have 2 different prices depending on your monthly plan. For plans over $65/month you will be eligible for the $299.99 price, those below will pay $349.99. For those of you looking to upgrade and renew your contract for 2 years you will also pay $349.99 and those of you looking to purchase the Bold sans-contract can expect to pay $679.99.

The sans-contract price is a bit steep, but if you have been waiting since early Summer it’s time to play ball. Also please try to steer clear of the 49.99 Geek Squad email setup, seriously this is unnecessary.
The rest of us still have to wait until November 4th to get our hands on At&t’s BlackBerry Bold, but the celebs were out in full force in New York City’s Tribeca area on October 28th for a little At&t gift giving. Celebs including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Julianne Moore, Robert Buckley, Cynthia Nixon, and Tyson Beckford were on hand to celebrate At&t’s launch as well as take home their very own BlackBerry Bold. Unlike the launch party from a few weeks past, this time attendees were able to go home with their shiny new toys and honestly we can’t help but feel jealous. Our hopes of picking up the At&t BlackBerry Bold have gradually diminished over the past months after a series of delays had us convinced we might never see a launch. Thankfully At&t issued a press release today outlining the BlackBerry Bold launch for November 4th at a price point of $299.99 on a 2-year service agreement. It might not be the price we had all hoped for considering the $199 iPhone 3G and the $179 T-mobile G1, but in a few short weeks we can finally own one.

We thank everyone for being so patient with the At&t BlackBerry Bold release date information, but quite honestly this is the most botched device launch we can recall. Hopefully a few minutes alone with the Bold will quickly switch our mood so we can thoroughly enjoy the first 3G GSM BlackBerry. Continue reading
When you have Madonna and Michael Phelps at your NYC device launch party it is pretty much expected that the device would be on hand. Unfortunately for At&t, the BlackBerry Bold never made an appearance last night and instead attendees received I.O.U.’s with the promise of a BlackBerry Bold. It might be time to start crossing those fingers and hope we don’t see a Storm launch before the Bold. There have been no updates to the At&t Bold release date other than the mention by At&t last week that the device was still undergoing testing. Let the RIM and At&t finger pointing blame game continue, hopefully they are handing out Bold’s at the BlackBerry Developer Conference this Sunday.

When the iPhone 3G was released, iSuppli estimated the cost to be $174.33, which at the time seemed pricey. Fast forward to today and iSuppli’s breakdown for the BlackBerry Bold is reportedly costing RIM $169.41 to build. With the announcement of the building cost, many analysts are turning more bullish on RIM because they were expecting a $200 price point to match the iPhone 3G.
iSuppli’s teardown also gives insight into RIM’s stable of suppliers. The most costly component is a chip from Marvell Technology (MRVL) that handles both the wireless communications and the applications running on the device and costs a little more than $34. The second-most costly component is the screen, supplied by Samsung, which costs $16. Samsung also supplied memory chips that cost another $10.45. The handset’s internal camera came from OmniVision Technologies (OVTI) and cost a little less than $10. Two parts from Texas Instruments (TXN) cost a combined $7.72, while SiRF Technology (SIRF) supplied a $5 GPS chip.
The big question is whether or not RIM will maintain the $299 price tag currently being offered for the Bold when At&t launches the device this year. The combinations of delays and a higher price tag have many Bold hopefuls (including ourselves) starting to rethink the purchase.

Following launches in Hong Kong and Singapore, the BlackBerry Bold is now launching in the Philippines via Smart Communications. While the U.S. continues to wait in agony as delays continue to push back the At&t launch, Philippine residents will be happy to know the BlackBerry Bold will be offered free with postpaid plans of P2500 a month and higher. Unlike the BlackBerry Storm and Apple iPhone, Smart Communications is marketing the Bold to compete for business customers despite the updated OS and multimedia capabilities.
