Apple might have reached 10 million iPhones sold, but Google’s first Android-powered device, the T-mobile G1, is making its own mark in the mobile industry.  According to Engadget, T-mobile has now reached 1.5 million pre-ordered G1’s after less than 1 month of availability for existing T-mobile customers.  In 9 days the G1 will be available publicly and if new subscribers share the same interest for the G1 we could find ourselves crowning a new mobile king in device sales.  As a side note, Apple took 74 days to sell 1 million first-generation iPhones after a massive marketing campaign.  At this point Google and T-mobile have done very little to promote the device and instead relied on consumer confidence in Google.

android T mobile G1 hits 1.5 million Pre Orders

Update: 10/16: According to an article in Information week the original source of the story came from The Motley Fool where some dodgy fact finding by author Anders Bylund who cited a Cens.com article (come on, keep up) that said, “according to industry insiders, T-Mobile is planning to order a total of between 1.5 million and 2 million units of G1 with HTC in the near future, including 400,000 to 500,000 to be sold in the fourth quarter of this year.”  He then took information provided by T-Mobile about them tripling pre-orders due to demand and came up with this simple sum. 500,000 x 3 = 1.5million
