navigation software

With conflicting reports from the infamous New York Times’ review of the iPhone 3G, consumers have been left wondering whether or not the iPhone 3G GPS receiver is capable of turn-by-turn directions.  Personally we have nothing but positive things to say about the accuracy of the iPhone 3G GPS receiver and find it on par with the Nokia N95-3 NAM positioning.  Prepare for the questions to continue as the iPhone 2.1 Software Update was released for developers.

iPhone 3G Turn-by-Turn Directions in 2.1 Update

The iPhone 2.1 Software Update explicitly reveals that improvements in the accuracy of the GPS functions are at the forefront.  Not only will the iPhone deliver your location, but it will be able to tell which direction you are going as well as how fast you are moving.  Despite New York Times’ writer David Pogue’s claim’s that the antenna is “too small”, the update is irrefutable evidence that turn-by-turn directions are in the iPhone 3G pipeline.  It is also worth mentioning that Apple VP Greg Joswiak refuted the claims by David Pogue’s review and dismissed the notion that the iPhone 3G antenna was incapable of delivering turn-by-turn directions.

The iPhone 2.1 Software is for development only so our confirmation of the iPhone 3G turn-by-turn directions might take some time.  The OS also cannot be used for developing iPhone 2.0 applications so hopefully we have a willing 3rd party ready to take on the task of a turn-by-turn software release (TomTom anyone?).  We will keep you posted with future developments as always so stay tuned.
