Asus M930

The art of making a copy requires skill in both design and technology.  Asus has been demoing their new M930i smartphone at various press events, but the truth is in the name; smartphone.  At first glance our initial thoughts were that we were looking at a Nokia E90 without an impressive interior screen.  The was exactly the case with initial reports that the external screen will run QVGA and the internal display will be QVGA or less.  Without a price point it is difficult to see where this device would fit into the marketplace, but as far as the specs go you are not looking at anything revolutionary.  Here is a rundown of the specs:

  • 2.6 internet and 2.0 inch external displays
  • UMTS, HSDPA (3.6Mbps)
  • WCDMA 2100Mhz (no surprise here, European 3g bands), EDGE, GPRS
  • TI 2431 450Mhz processor
  • Windows Mobile 6
  • 256MB Flash + 64MB DDR Ram
  • 2 Megapixel camera
  • WLAN 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth, USB 2.0
  • MicroSD slot

If the price point is low enough it could win over some E90 hopefuls who do not see the need to invest the $700+ in a new communicator, but the Asus M930 lacks the impressive screen of the E90 and a solid device history that the communicator lineup has always brought to the table.  We will hold off on a final verdict until the M930 materializes in sales channels or a review unit.
