AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Nov 06, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today announced the Treo(TM) Pro smartphone on the Vodafone New Zealand network. With its streamlined design and Palm’s ease-of-use innovations layered on Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, Treo Pro is a unique combination of sleek simplicity and robust productivity — including email, Wi-Fi and GPS capabilities(1) — that meets the needs of businesses and end users alike.

The Treo Pro smartphone lets IT managers support an increasingly mobile work force with the ease of use and robust feature set business professionals demand. Besides the benefits of lower infrastructure and support costs and increased productivity, Treo Pro can deliver the increased security, easier device management and access to information on the corporate network that Windows Mobile 6.1 provides.

“Vodafone New Zealand’s business customers need mobile access to business productivity tools in a well-designed device that’s easy to use,” said Alan Leigh, general manager of Business Marketing, Vodafone New Zealand. “Treo Pro broadens our business product portfolio with a Windows Mobile smartphone that can increase productivity as it lowers infrastructure and support costs.” Continue reading

Despite the success of the Palm Centro and the Treo Pro release, Palm Inc. has reported a fifth straight quarterly loss causing its shares to fall 7.5 percent in extended trading.  As the gap widens between Palm and rival Research In Motion (RIM), it seems that a truly innovative device is going to be necessary to help Palm recover financially.  It looks like selling 2 million Palm Centros just wasn’t enough after the Foleo fiasco and stagnant sales of their legacy Palm Treo lineup.

Hopefully the Treo Pro delivers the much needed sales revenue that CEO Ed Colligan was looking for when he announced the device last month.  With the Treo Pro expected to battle head to head against the Apple iPhone 3G and the BlackBerry Bold, the road ahead is very challenging.  Chief Financial Officer Andrew Brown said,

Profitability will improve as Palm works to cut the cost of making Centro phones and new Treo models account for a larger portion of sales.

Palm currently represents 10.8 percent of the smartphone market, down from 13.4 percent in the previous three months.  Research in Motion now maintains 53.6 percent, up from 44.5 percent during that same time period.

The Treo™ Pro by Palm hit the Internet in full force this week with a surprise announcement, followed by a stop for official press shots and a video explaining the capabilities and development that went into the device.  While CDMA users just picked up the Treo 800w in July on Sprint, the rest of the world will be enjoying the latest unlocked GSM Treo very soon.

With the usual $549 US and EUR 399 UK price tags, the Treo Pro fits nicely into the high-end smartphone market at a much more reasonable cost than similar devices.  It is no mystery that Palm has its sights set on RIM’s market share, positioned to be a direct competitor against the BlackBerry Bold 9000.  The only question is whether the Treo Pro succeed without carrier subsidized pricing and the heavily discounted cost of the iPhone 3G and BlackBerry Bold on certain carriers.

Treoâ„¢ Pro by Palm Specifications:

  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional Edition
  • Qualcomm MSM7201 400MHz Processor
  • 320 x 320 pixel TFT (flush) touchscreen
  • Triband UMTS: 850/1900/2100MHz, Quadband GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz
  • 802.11 b/g with WPA, WPA2, and 801.1x authentication
  • Built-in GPS
  • Bluetooth 2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate
  • 256MB ROM (100MB available), 128MB RAM
  • 2.0 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom and video capture
  • 1500 mAh lithium-ion battery: 5 hours talk time, 250 hours standby
  • microSDHC support (up to 32GB)
  • 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack
  • Dimensions: 4.49″ x 2.36″ x .53″, Weight: 4.69 oz
  • Release Date: Fall 2008

While the 2.0 megapixel camera and the 320 x 320 px resolution screen are not as impressive as they once were, it is worth noting that this the first Palm Treo where the screen is flush with the rest of the device.  There will be no more cue tips and cleaning cloths being jammed into the edges of the screen in an attempt to clean off dust and grime.  With the success of Palm’s Centro, the Treo Pro has some ‘bold’ shoes to fill and we are just as excited as the rest of your are to get our hands on a review unit.  In the meantime you can take a peak at some excellent shots taken by Mathew Miller over at Zdnet to satisfy your taste buds.

So we told you about the leaked screenshot from the internal Palm website showing off the unreleased Palm Treo Pro, formerly known as the Treo 850/850v.  Now the same Chinese forum which leaked the images has released a series of images showing the Treo Pro in full glory and also included some additional details on the specs.

For starters the 400MHz processor has been confirmed as well as the 256MB ROM and 128MB RAM.  This in itself should sooth any worries that the device will under perform in Windows Mobile 6.1 (yes it is a WM Palm Treo).  The Treo Pro will also features built-in GPS, tri-band 3G data thanks to HSDPA connectivity and quad-band GSM.  With tri-band 3G GSM support you can expect to see a full-scale worldwide launch for the Palm Treo Pro

The camera on the Treo Pro is 2.0 megapixels and like all Treos before it, lacks flash or autofocus.  The screen runs at Treo 800w resolution, 320 x 320 pixels, and is TFT 65k colors.  Connecting the Treo Pro to your computer for data transfer, tethering or syncing is now a breeze with the microUSB connector.  It looks like Palm finally realized we were tired of the proprietary connectors.

With a 3.5mm headphone jack and a 1500mAh battery, the Treo Pro should have no problem playing your tunes for hours and based upon the specs the performance should be top notch.  The Treo Pro is a sexy looking device and we would be more than happy to see it find a home on At&t here in the US while Apple sorts out the iPhone 3G reception bugs.

The next generation in Palm smartphones is no longer a rumor, we are proud to welcome the Palm Treo 850 to the list of upcoming devices.  We had seen pictures of the mystery device in the past thanks to BGR, but today a leaked screenshot from an internal Palm website has revealed that the Treo 850/850v is now the Treo Pro.  Complete with an extra-thin form factor, HSDPA 3G connectivity (yes GSM, sorry CDMA users), 320 x 320 pixel touchscreen, 3.5 mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi, microSD slot, and microUSB connector.

With the ringer switch up top and a form factor similar to the Palm Centro but in an extra-slim form, the Treo Pro looks to be the first in a series of steps to reinvent Palm’s lineup.  The previously unconfirmed 400 MHz processor and 100MB of RAM remains unchanged, but we hope to have an official device spec list later this week.  In the meantime, refresh your memory with a couple exclusive pictures compliments of BGR.

Palm sells 2 million Centros

by Nick Marshall | July 29th, 2008 | 3:05 pm

The expectation that Palm would sell 2 million Centros in 2008 was a reasonable assumption with the $99 price point and availability in more than 25 countries.  Unfortunately the world has grown tired of an aging Palm OS and eventually the financial struggles of Palm will return to the forefront of the media.  The good news is that only a little over a month after Palm’s senior vice president of marketing, Brodie Keast, told the NY Times that they expected to sell 2 million Centros in 2008, the achievement was reached.

Palm sells 2 million Centros

According to recent data released by Admob, the largest advertising network on the mobile web, the Palm Centro has jumped to number 8 on the list of mobile phones worldwide as of May 2008 and currently sits at number 7.  This is what Admob had to say about the Palm Centro in their report,

Consumers are ready to do more on their mobile phone, and Centro has struck a chord around the world,” said Brodie Keast, senior vice president of marketing for Palm, Inc. “Centro has everything a person needs to stay connected with everyone who is important to them — and at a price point and size that make smartphones more attractive to a much wider audience.”

Another interesting piece of information is that Palm has showed strong growth among smartphone manufacturers, ranking Number 2 in the US in mobile advertising reach and Number 3 worldwide.  With all major US carriers, except T-mobile, offering the Palm Centro and the unlocked version being sold on Palm’s website the success of the Centro should continue.  The big question now is whether the iPhone 3G will maintain its current pace to reach the 2 million units sold mark in 2008.

The success of the Palm Centro has finally forced the number one CDMA carrier in the US to re-think its device lineup for the Palm smartphones.  According to reports from Verizon Wireless, the Palm Treo 755p has reached its EOL (end of life) and the carrier will focus on the Palm Centro as the sole Palm OS-powered device.  The most interesting part of the announcement is that Verizon delayed the launch of the Treo 755p so long that it has only been in the carrier’s lineup for a few months.  It looks like the painful delays were hardly worth the wait and Verizon is prematurely pulling out the rug underneath the Treo 755p due to slow device sales and the success of the Palm Centro.

Verizon Palm Treo 755p reaches EOL, price slashing begins

The good news for anyone turned away from the original Treo 755p $299 price tag is that Verizon Wireless is slashing prices.  Starting today you can pickup the Palm Treo 755p for only $99 on a new 2 year service agreement.  With a bigger screen and a soft finish backing, the added spacing in the keyboard layout gives those unable to text on the cramped QWERTY-Centro keyboard a viable option at an identical price point.

While GSM Centro users have been able to take advantage of the Google Maps MyLocation feature for some time, CDMA users have been left in the dust.  Today Sprint Centro users are able to join in on the fun thanks to the latest firmware update released on the Palm Website, version 1.07 for those of you keeping tabs.  Beyond the MyLocation feature are also improvements to GMAIL IMAP compatibility, Exchange Activesync, Bluetooth, SprintTV, AOL Instant Messenger, Perferred Roaming Lists (PRL) OTA and the default camera shutter sound.

Sprint Centro firmware update 1.07 adds MyLocation

Keep in mind that the MyLocation feature allows positioning using WiFi signals and cellular towers since the Centro does not have a dedicated GPS receiver.  Even so, the positioning is adequate and in some cases it can be spot on depending on your reception.  If you have the Sprint Centro the 1.07 firmware update is well worth the 20 minute installation windows, but remember to backup your data prior to updating the device.

Download the Sprint Centro 1.07 firmware with MyLocation feature here.

The Samsung Instinct has been the focus in Sprint’s marketing efforts, but Windows Mobile enthusiasts have been patiently awaiting the arrival of the next generation in Palm’s CDMA Treos.  The Palm Treo 800w has become official with the latest press release direct from Sprint, outlining the specs of this Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone complete with WiFi and GPS.  While the iPhone and Instinct steal the spotlight, the Treo 800w has been positioned alongside the other Business smartphones aimed at taking corporate America sales away from both RIM and Apple.

As the first Treo to offer WiFi, the 800w is a rock-solid device much like the Treo 700wx.  While other Windows Mobile smartphones offer faster processing power and more RAM, the Windows Mobile Treos always seem to perform far beyond what their specs would suggest.  With EVDO Rev A support, GPS, WiFi and Windows Mobile 6.1, the Treo 800w is the perfect update for existing Treo 700wx users not willing to take the ‘bold’ leap into BlackBerry’s lineup.  It will be interesting to see how long the Treo 800w is able to remain at the top of Sprint Business sales as RIM prepares to launch the BlackBerry Bold across all US carriers in early September.  In the meantime you can pickup the Sprint Treo 800w for $249.99 on a 2 year contract after Mail in Rebates.

Sprint releases the Treo 800w Smartphone

Full Press Release:

SUNNYVALE, Calif. and OVERLAND PARK, Kan., July 14, 2008 - Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) and Sprint (NYSE:S) today introduced the Palm® Treoâ„¢ 800w, Sprint’s newest smartphone with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. Designed for business users who depend on their smartphones for high-speed productivity on the go, the Palm Treo 800w operates on the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network(1) and comes out of the box with support for EV-DO Rev. A data speeds, WiFi for data and GPS capabilities.(2)

The Treo 800w is Palm’s most business-friendly phone yet. IT departments can simplify infrastructure and lower costs with a direct connection to Microsoft Exchange Server, giving users up-to-date email, contacts, calendars and access to other productivity applications. Palm designed the Treo 800w for easy-to-use mobility with a full QWERTY keyboard, five-way navigation and one-touch buttons to the most-used applications, making it a smartphone people want to use.

As Sprint’s first smartphone to ship immediately with EV-DO Rev. A network support, the Treo 800w offers customers the ability to quickly browse the web and send and receive emails - even those with large attachments - at broadband speeds. The vast majority of Sprint’s Mobile Broadband Network has been upgraded to EV-DO Rev. A technology, providing Treo 800w users blazing-fast speeds on the nation’s largest mobile broadband network (based on covered square miles). The Sprint Mobile Broadband Network (inclusive of data roaming) reaches more than 246 million people, 16,022 cities and 1,506 airports and brings customers instant gratification so they can work fast and on the go. With EV-DO Rev. A, peak network download data rates increase to 3.1 Mbps and peak upload data rates increase to 1.8 Mbps; average download speeds improve to 600 kbps to 1.4 mbps and average uplink speeds increase to 350-500 kbps.

Palm’s WiFi hardware and software innovations make it easy to get online fast and manage network connections and power usage. The one-touch WiFi button provides a clean, uncluttered WiFi experience that gets Treo 800w users rapidly connected at home, in the office or in WiFi hotspots.(2) It includes 802.11b/g WiFi and built-in Internet Explorer Mobile, which means faster, more secure access to web-based data.

With integrated GPS and Palm software enhancements, the Treo 800w smartphone offers maps, point-to-point directions and point-of-interest (POI) searches for locations such as restaurants or stores.(3) POI search is available directly from the Today Screen and is integrated with contacts, giving customers one-touch access to the places they want to go. Treo 800w also supports Sprint Navigation for turn-by-turn directions as well as other popular third-party location-based services applications.

Robust Business Productivity Features

Companies looking for more control, centralization and security will find the Treo 800w an attractive choice. It connects directly with Exchange Server 2003 SP2 or 2007 and works within a company’s existing Microsoft infrastructure, eliminating costly middleware or the maintenance of additional servers. The Treo 800w extends business capabilities by providing a familiar Microsoft Windows experience while on the go to keep employees productive. With thousands of applications available for Windows Mobile, businesses can extend mobility beyond email to optimize business processes whether in sales or out in field.

The Treo 800w comes fully equipped with easy-to-use professional email. Microsoft Direct Push Technology is available out of the box and gives users connected to a Microsoft Exchange Server fast, automatic wireless updates from their email, calendar, contacts and tasks.(4) Users can download email attachments to view and edit Microsoft Word and Excel files, view PowerPoint and PDF files, and open ZIP files.

The Treo 800w is compatible with Microsoft’s System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008, which delivers increased security and easier smartphone management as well as access to information on the corporate network via mobile VPN. IT professionals can confidently manage large Treo 800w deployments the same way they would expect to manage PCs with a low-cost, reliable solution that fits seamlessly with their existing IT infrastructures.

The Palm Experience on Windows Mobile 6.1

“Palm is adding a unique stamp to the Windows Mobile experience with the Treo 800w,” said Stephane Maes, vice president, product marketing, Palm, Inc. “It’s an easy-to-use feature-packed smartphone that will keep users happy, empowered and productive.”

In addition to Palm’s WiFi and GPS enhancements, Palm innovations on top of Windows Mobile include:

Today Screen enhancements — call, text, email, perform a web search and map a contact’s address, all directly from the Today Screen;(5)
Dial from the Today Screen — enter the contact name, select the number and dial. Add text or picture speed dials for one-touch calls to family and friends, or use the physical or touch screen number keys to dial the number directly;
Voicemail controls — VCR-like icons, such as rewind, delete and fast-forward, for easy navigation;
Ignore with text — ignore a call quickly by sending a text message, such as “In a meeting” or “Can’t talk right now”;
Superior phone and call management — dedicated mute, speakerphone, conference calling icons, or dial any number in an email or webpage, all with just one touch; and
Palm ease-of-use features — hard buttons for email and calendar, a five-way navigation button and on/off ringer switch.

Exclusive Sprint Content and Services

“Sprint recognizes that businesses must stay productive and competitive with quick, always-accessible information and assistance for their own customers,” said Michael Hahn, vice president of device operations for Sprint. “With instant access to email, messaging services and the web on the nation’s largest Mobile Broadband Network, Sprint provides its customers the mobile tools they need to increase productivity and improve competitiveness now.”

In addition to the valuable business-friendly features delivered through Palm and Windows Mobile 6.1, new business applications are being created through Sprint’s newly launched Professional Developer Program and with tools such as the Titan platform for Windows Mobile 6.1 devices. A growing community of application developers who may previously have focused on desktop services are now finding it easier to generate services that can perform on both the desktop and mobile devices.

Treo 800w customers can leverage the speed of the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network to access Sprint content, including:
